Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Hornbeck.
Jesse, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started working in the salon business at 15 as a receptionist at Steven Paul Salon in Old Town Scottsdale and definitely got “the bug.” I worked there all through college and then decided I wanted to go to beauty school. After graduating from beauty school, I assisted at Steven Paul and then eventually went out on my own and rented a station there. I worked there until I moved up to Flagstaff nine years ago and then, I decided it was time I take everything I had learned and open my own salon in Flagstaff.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been easy but it’s been worth it. I had to start over and build a clientele in a new city where I didn’t know a lot of people. That took me out of my comfort zone but I’ve met so many amazing clients and contacts because I did that. I’ve been through a failed business partnership that was hard but the right decision and taught me so much. My advice is to always ask for advice and do your research. There are always resources out there to help women in business and sometimes you just have to look for them.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Pin-ups Salon Flagstaff story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a hairstylist that specializes in color and I’m most known for my Vivid or Fantasy colors. I’m most proud of my range of work and the fact that I can do everything from classic hairstyling and coloring to dreadlocks and editorial work to make up to brides and everything in between. I think what sets me apart from others is my honesty and straightforward way of interacting with my clients. I don’t want people to have false ideas of what their hair is going to look like. I also am a stickler for good hair care and people using products that will help them have the best hair possible and not work against themselves or a goal we are working towards.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I like the “your day off” podcast as well as Marc Maron and Getting Curios with JVN because, let’s face it, I’m a hairdresser and I like learning about people.
