Conversations with the Inspiring Jess Hutchens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Hutchens.

Jess, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From 2012-2015, I was a 3rd grade teacher in an inner city school. My second year teaching, I began my personal training certification with the encouragement of my husband who was in physical therapy school at the time. At the end of my second year teaching, I began personal training in the evenings and on weekends. My passion for fitness education continued to grow as I trained more and more clients. My 3rd year teaching, my father suddenly passed away and I decided then and there that life was too short to do something I wasn’t 100% in love with, so I gave my teaching resignation shortly after. I started my in-home personal training business Flawless Fitness LLC in May of 2015 and it’s been an incredible journey ever since! I’ve been training clients in the Scottsdale area for a little over 4 years now and I’m still as passionate about it as I was on Day 1.

I’m an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutritionist and soon to be certified in Behavioral Change. I’m also a plant-based personal trainer, in which, I’ve been vegan for almost two years and love helping clients make that lifestyle change! My services include in-home training, online training, online nutrition coaching and soon will be at a small gym to expand my services location.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with anything in life, there have been incredible moments and not so pleasant times for my business.
In the beginning, I literally started with ONE in-home client. Months passed and more and more clients found me, and it’s been an ebb and flow of business ever since. Some months are so incredibly busy that, I don’t know how I can do it all alone and other months are still slower than I’d like (holidays and vacation times are tough for trainers).

My biggest advice is to be patient and know that if you truly work hard and give it all you’ve got, then your business will do great! For women who are just starting their journey, I would say believe in yourself and don’t doubt yourself when times get tough. Business is never 100% perfect all the time, so don’t take it too personal when customers aren’t always satisfied or dislike something about you/your business. Do the best you can and stay positive through it all.

What should we know about Flawless Fitness LLC ? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What sets me apart as a personal trainer is that I’m a plant-based, female trainer. I specialize in making women feel their absolute best and work on behavior and lifestyle changes instead of just a “quick fix” diet. I offer in-home training, which is a great alternative for those who are busy and don’t have time for the gym or even those who are too intimidated to be in a gym setting.

I also offer online personal training and macro/nutrition coaching. I pride myself on being very interactive through the online experience. I want ALL of my clients to succeed, even if we’re not physically together.
As a trainer, I try to analyze each client and tailor a program to their individual needs. Since I was an educator, I feel my strengths include educating my clients on how to live the healthiest lifestyle possible.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I love to read self-help, personal development books! A few of my favorites are the 10X Rule by Grant Cardone, anything by Gary Vaynerchuck and Tim Ferriss and I’m currently reading the Purple Cow by Seth Godin.
The only podcast I really listen to is the Fitposium Podcast by James Patrick, in which they give advice to fitness professionals.
