Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Bolton.
Heidi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Many, many moons ago, I was a career waitress. I needed to change. I loved customer service, but couldn’t wait on drunk people anymore…. my hair guy at the time, suggested I think about hair school. I had never thought about hair, had never even blow dried someone else’s hair. I was game. I got a job out of school, stayed for a year. Moved around for a bit, until I found the salon suites I’m currently in. I love it there… and in the last two years, I’ve grown exponentially. I’m in love with my job. I’m an education addict and have the best little suite, ever thanks to my amazing husband. Because of my hard work and support from my people, I was lucky enough to become part of PulpRiot’s Riotsquad, became part of Modern Salon Magazines 2017 Top 100 and now, I get to be a social media ambassador for Olivia Garden. All because of Instagram! Crazy!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I’ve said before, being a hairstylist is not easy. It’s physically hard on the body and can take a toll on you emotionally at times. I would say education is the most important thing. Educate yourself about everything… what you want to do. Get to know what’s out there. From products, to tax laws, to business advice. Do your research. Look around at where you want to work. Who you’d want to work with. Take charge of your decisions. With social media, everything looks simple. Make sure your morals are in check. Care about what you do and who you do it for. Have self respect.
What should we know about Heidi Does Hair? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Well, I do hair! All sorts of hair. But coloring hair is my jam. Rainbow colors are my specialty. I’ve always been good at color, but when rainbow colors became popular, it was like the lottery… I am extremely honest. I will always tell you what I can and can not do. I will always tell you what’s best for your hair. I’m a communicator.
My work motto is if I can, I will. I don’t say no, just because I feel like it. I try to accommodate my clients needs. From scheduling to changing things up with your style. I’m not sure how different I am from others, but I can tell you, I LOVE my job. I’m always learning. Educating myself. Each time, I do your hair, it will be better then the last. 😉
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I’m going to stick with current women that inspire me. Or, we’ll be here all day. I have a few amazing women that are clients. They’re moms, business women, wives. And, just being around them is inspiring. I work with a couple of women who rock. They’re supportive to a new level. I’ve never experienced that before. And then, there’s the women in Instagram land. So many women… Alexis Thurston (@alexisbutterflyloft) is a major inspiration (along with her husband, she really shows what teamwork is with him). Smart, kind, funny and talented women inspire me.
