Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Myers.
Heather, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my career in the fitness industry 8 years ago. I was so young and full of so much anxiety. There was a time I found myself on antidepressants, I couldn’t eat, sleep, or slept too much, had panic attacks, could barely get out of bed due to injuries, you name it. I was a mess. I was then introduced to the world of fitness and personal training. It was a place where I had control of what was happening to my body. I found an escape, and by the grace of God, I found myself again free of medications and panic attacks. I was also able to heal and come back from injuries due to horse competitions and training. I started to see drastic changes in my body and mind, as I relied on God’s promise for me and stuck to a healthy exercise plan. That is when I knew this is the industry I needed to pursue. I needed to find the bridge between the gap of faith and fitness.
I first started studying for my CPT certification, and soon enrolled at Grand Canyon University to then complete my BS in Exercise Science with an Emphasis in Health education in 2013. I was in love with how the body moved and worked together as this beautiful vessel. I started my career in personal training that soon evolved into group training. I loved the aspect of the community that was involved in groups. Friendships were built, accountability was held, and change was happening.
It wasn’t until 2013, that I was introduced to the world of indoor cycling. I thought those people were crazy, to be honest. I mean how could someone have the desire to ride a stationary bike and be in front of so many people? I am an extroverted introvert, so the thought being front and center was not my cup of tea. Then, the day came for me to teach my first class. I had been going through training and was working full time at a gym. I had only trained for indoor cycling as a last case scenario kind of sub. The day came that an instructor didn’t show up, and that was my call to clip in. Terrified, not ready, here I was to teach my first class on the fly. Do you know what happened? I didn’t hate it. I actually enjoyed every second, every pedal stroke to the beat, the energy of the room. Soon to be my passion.
Through the past five years, I had been teaching and leading at studios all over the Phoenix valley and eventually found my home in North Scottsdale at Flywheel Sports. I fell in love with the concept of riding to the beat of the music, being given a platform to speak truth into peoples lives. This has also introduced mine to an incredible community, which allowed me to start teaching at Barre3. Another space full of life an community. A space where people come to feel balanced in body and empowered from within.
Over the years, through prayer, reading, meditation, observation I have been able to develop who I am as an instructor. We are called to love one another. We are called to live life all for The Creator, as he selflessly and recklessly loves us. And I came to the realization, that I don’t need to be a missionary in a foreign country to spread the light of this grace, compassion, and never-ending love that I have been blessed to experience. It can happen in my career and the most ordinary places. The Gospel has infused the way I speak and use my messaging in classes. I want everyone to know that they are created uniquely and beautifully for greatness. I want people to realize and discover the gifts they have been given. I want to take on this journey of life with my community!
Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth road? That’s funny. It’s been a journey full of detours, winding roads and massive mountains to climb. God has this way of working with me. It’s through times of struggle, chaos, and challenge where he speaks to me and teaches me.
I have found struggles in figuring out my place in the fitness industry. Battling insecurities of wondering if I was good enough. I faced many studio changes from some closing down with days notice, to harsh environments that I needed to leave, injuries and life changes. There have been waves where my anxiety flared back to my panic attacks.
But you know what all those hardships brought? A new open door. A new opportunity, It brought me to where I am today as a person and instructor. I have learned SO much about myself and others.
I still to this day struggle with anxiety, but I have been able to find the root of it. MY ANXIETY STEMS FROM CHANGE. Whether it’s transitioning to a new studio or losing a job, it was changing. I have so much fear in the unknown and it unglued me at times.
My advice for women, especially in the young professional world, is change is going to happen. There are going to be times where it feels like nothing is running the way we want it to. We may face a job loss, career change, life change. But I assure you, there are a reason and purpose for every event in our lives. God will never give us anything too big for us to handle. I encourage you even in the hard times to see the beauty you have in this life, but also ask yourself, what am I to learn through this situation? Our roads are going to be bumpy at times, but if we hold and endure the end point is going to lead us to something great and beautiful. So, hang on dear friend and find a community that will be there by your side in the good and the bad.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Flywheel, Barre3 & Flyte Sport story. Tell us more about it.
I like to say I am part fitness professional, DJ, farm girl. I love to be real with my community. I fiercely love God. I truly find specialization in fitness. It is my passion and has a strong background in injury prevention, programming, and education.
Flywheel & Barre3 are my main two studios that I teach out of. They have empowered me to be uniquely myself in the space and couldn’t be more grateful for the community I have entered into. I am so blessed in being able to sweat with and move to the beat in both studios.
Flywheel, you find your self in a dark room on a bike, with soul-filling and inspiring music. Your heart is racing and you can feel the change that is happening to you in your heart and mind.
At Barre3, you are in a space where you are empowered to move in a way which serves your body best. Every move is supported by licensed physical therapists and chiropractors. At Barre3, we stand behind saying we want to be “balanced in body and empowered from within.”
Both studios are for everyone. I make an intentional effort to make sure that everyone who walks in through the doors is seen, heard and valued.
In my industry, I am known for my strong messaging. I am not afraid to tackle the nitty-gritty things in life. I am not afraid to speak the truth into the lives that show up in my studios. I am proud that I can be real with my clients. I love that in my classes we can all work through hard things TOGETHER. I promise to them 110% of my soul in all my classes.
My strong faith background has also led me to an incredible opportunity as an ambassador for Flyte Sport. Flyte promotes a lifestyle that encourages the bridging of faith and fitness in a culture that finds it difficult to see how the two can connect. The world of fitness is saturated with messages of individualistic empowerment and encourages self-centered gain for self-advancing purposes. It was a perfect fit! They create clean, wholesome products that I am able to incorporate into my active lifestyle as support.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Growing up, I showed horses competitively. I became nationally ranked and was training horses full time in late high school. This eventually led me to a lot of injuries. I was facing days not being able to get out of bed due to severe back pain. I was also under a lot of emotional stress, fighting to be the top ranked in my divisions, but found out that I am not the best.
These experiences have taught me so much about myself and life. Experiencing the injuries that I have personally had, has allowed me to gain knowledge and fascination for injury prevention. I love being able to problem solve with the muscle imbalances our bodies face at times. I have also been taught discipline at a young age. It takes a lot of time and sacrifice to show horses, and I truly believe that helped me develop my commitment and dedication that I have in my career now. Emotionally, I have been able to learn that I will never be the best. Someone is always going to be faster, better, stronger or smarter than me. But that is okay. God created my capacity for me. He has given me specific gifts for me to use, and there is no mistake in what He has given me.
