Conversations with the Inspiring Hannah Cho

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Cho.

Hannah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Back before we all had a smartphone full of pictures & videos, I was the kid walking around with a handheld camcorder (yeah, the kind that required an actual VHS tape for recording). I loved documenting the world around me. Most of the footage was sleepovers with friends, any event I attended, dance performances at my church. I also went through countless disposable cameras & probably spent most of my allowance getting them developed. I liked the idea of capturing every moment & person in my life. Fast forward to my late teens/early twenties & suddenly, there was this new world emerging called social media. & it just clicked. This hobby of mine that didn’t really have an outlet, now there’s platforms for & places to share it. I started making YouTube videos in 2009. I borrowed my parent’s point & shoot camera set it up on top of some boxes & started talking to it. I recorded my thoughts, my apartment, my pets, pretty much everything. & people started subscribing. & then a community grew & since then I’ve met (in person or online) so many awesome people from around the world who are like me or aren’t like me, but I share my life with them & we learn & laugh & grow together.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The internet is ever changing, & quickly. It’s challenging trying to stay in the know without letting it consume you. It’s been important to find a balance. Knowing how much to share while still maintaining some privacy. Knowing what trends to follow while still being true to myself. I think if it ever got to a point that it felt more like a chore than a passion, maybe it’s time to reevaluate what it’s purpose is & why you’re doing it.

What should we know about HelloHannahCho? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My YouTube channel started out with rants & videos of my daily life (like going to the mall), but it was the makeup reviews that really made it take off. Ten years ago, there wasn’t so much personal, honest content about beauty products or products, in general, like there is now. So, I would say I specialize in sharing about stuff I like. People seemed to trust my opinion or at least liked hearing what it was. What sets me apart is my upbeat personality. I like to keep things positive & bright & keep a good outlook. That’s true to who I am even off camera & I think people can tell I’m being genuine.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Well, always being the kid that liked capturing everything definitely played a huge role. I was also allowed to express my creativity & explore different creative outlets. Also, a lot of my life experiences have taught me to let things go. I’ve learned how to let things roll off my back & not take myself too seriously, which is great because the internet is a very opinionated place.
