Conversations with the Inspiring Grace Carpenter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Carpenter.

Grace, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My design journey began in the Netherlands when I was 23. Out of equal parts boredom and inspiration, I started renovating old row houses. Fast forward 15 years, and I am designing, staging, and renovating homes as my full-time career.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing was smooth. There were starts and stops, and even periods of time where I went off and had an entirely different career, but I always found my way back to design. My advice to anyone interested in design is to get started! There is no right or wrong way, and it is only by DOING that you can decide if you love it or not.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I do many things, but I am most known for “saving” historic houses in downtown Phoenix, and for staging homes so they sell quickly. I use a lot of thrifted pieces in my staging, which I think resonates with home buyers. I use a combination of vintage and modern elements in my designs to create a look that feels warm and collected.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
As a kid, I grew up going thrifting with my mom. I don’t even remember a time when I didn’t enjoy it. Whenever I get a free moment, I spend it combing thrift stores, estate sales, and Goodwills in the Phoenix area… it’s kind of an addiction! I joke that my design business sprung up out of necessity due to my thrifting habit. I was lucky enough to fashion a career out of my favorite hobby!
