Today we’d like to introduce you to Deven Luther.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Deven. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been practically doing hair my entire life! When I was 3 years old, I was braiding my own hair. I loved the beauty industry and how it made people feel so beautiful and confident, and I thought “Wow, I could empower people every day… how great would that be?!” I started beauty school at 16. I told my mom and dad that I wanted to go, and thankfully they thought it was a great idea. I originally thought it would be a great way to earn money while I went to college for a different career, but I had to be true to myself and realized that this was my passion!
Once I graduated high school, I got my license and my first job working for Regis Corporation in 2011. Some of the best memories of my career were made while working for them. After that, I started working for a salon called Sincerely Yours Salon. It was a great experience, and I learned a lot.
In October of 2017, I finally took the leap, and I opened my salon Electric Hair Studio. My whole family and all my beautiful guests supported me in the change from an employee to business owner. It took me a year of planning and then, my dream became a reality. It has been the best decision I have ever made. I absolutely love my salon and all of my beautiful guests. I couldn’t have done it without them!
Has it been a smooth road?
Is it a smooth road… it has taken me 7 years to get to my goal. It’s like a road trip, some of the turns are smooth and your wheels glide with every curve. Some are sharp and dip down making your stomach jump to the roof of your mouth. But every moment is worth it when you reach your goal. The hardest part is starting. Seeing the vision and figuring out how to make it a reality and powering on to reach it. I’ve had many mentors to help guide me, giving me courage and knowledge through my process, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. Life gives you obstacles, so you can’t let them stop you from making it to your goal. If you slip and fall or fail at some point, don’t despair, just get back up, dust yourself off and try again.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Electric Hair Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a hairstylist/beauty expert. I specialize in hair painting, color, cutting, styling, bridal and updos. I am most proud of the simple fact that I work with what each of us already has. In other words, I enhance what you already have, which means you are already perfect. To be able to empower and leave a person feeling great about themselves is such a fulfilling gift. What sets my services and business apart from others is the genuine love I have for my career. I will always strive to be the best so that you can feel your best. I will always be honest about what is realistic for a guests hair. If a guest comes in and they ask for something that their hair cannot handle. I will never push the hair past its integrity. Instead, we will go over the different options that their hair will be able to handle. If a guest is adamant about having a service that I know will not be flattering or will injure their hair, I will refuse that service. My guests are the advertising for my work, the showcasing of my art depicting their individual self-expression. My goal is for every single guest to be able to wear their hair proudly and beautifully.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
This is a hard question for me to answer. I look at many different blogs and books every single day. There are always things to learn. The latest book I have read was actually a philosophy book. It teaches how to better communicate, and how to take care of yourself so that you can, in turn, take better care of others. I’ve watched podcasts and gone to little business meetings to better teach me how to run a business stress-free and successfully. The latest podcast, which I actually found on Facebook, was by a young woman who was teaching how to value your business as a service provider. She talks about how each of us is priceless, but our services are what we are placing value on. Looking at it with that perspective keeps you from feeling like your devaluing yourself. Your service is just a piece of yourself you are sharing. That value is different from yours as a person.
