Conversations with the Inspiring Denisse Orduno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denisse Orduno.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Denisse. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Ever since I can remember I have enjoyed drawing on anything that I can get my hands on. I am a visual learner, and through art, I am better able to express myself and learn. I briefly majored in art in college but decided to go a different route after a couple of years. I have always had a strong inclination for all things art and re-discovered my passion through chalk boarding. I started by creating bulletin boards at the school where I work and eventually incorporated chalk art into my designs. The positive feedback that I received from my work encouraged me to pursue chalk boarding more seriously, by reaching out to local businesses and offering them my services. After creating an Instagram account that showcased my work and through word of mouth the demand increased. Since then, I’ve expanded to create chalk art for other events such as weddings, private parties, and more. Most recently, I have been branching out to window painting and murals. I create custom designs for large displays throughout Tucson. I got to where I am today largely through the support of Tucson businesses who encourage local artists like myself. My journey as an artist is just beginning, but I am thankful to be where I am today, and I can’t wait to see where my journey takes me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey has not always been easy, but I consider myself lucky to be able to do what I love. I constantly struggle to find a balance between work, my personal life, and my health. After getting out of a long-term relationship, I went through a period of rediscovery. I’ve been working on myself and spending time doing more of the things that make my heart happy. Some days it’s easy to feel discouraged, especially when you start comparing yourself to other talented artists. My advice to other women would be to remind yourself of your value and surround yourself with light, love, and positivity. Spend time with people who see the best in you even when you can’t see it yourself and practice self-care.

What should we know about Chalk it up to Denisse? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize and am known for chalk art, but I also provide other services such as window painting, sketching, mural painting, and more. One of the things that I’m most proud of is believing in myself enough to follow through with this endeavor. I’m also proud that my clients not only like my work and they are happy to refer me to others. This makes all my efforts truly worth it. I think what sets me apart from other artists is that I create my own original designs (unless asked for something specific). I like to give life to people’s visions, and my passion for this is something that’s reflected in my work.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
The strong women in my family and my mom especially are a constant source of inspiration for me. They’ve taught me endless lessons about hard work, persistence, and self-worth. My friends also inspire me through their unconditional support and the passion they put into the work they do.

I draw most of my inspiration from things and people that I find beautiful.
