Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Cherrington.
Denise, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Guyana South America and moved to New York when I was a child. I moved to Arizona in 2006, and I love it. I am a Human Resources Executive who has always had a love for fashion.
I started my Human Resources career in Retail. I’ve worked for companies such as Bloomingdales and the Parisian retailer Galeries Layfayette. While I love what I do and the vast learning opportunities it offers me, fashion will always be my passion. In 2014, I decided to start a blog, www.busystylebeauty.com it was intended to inspire the working woman. Ideas include outfits of the day, food, and fitness, with some travel thrown in there. Simultaneously I decided to take the brand to Instagram (bstylebeauty) where the audience is larger. I am having so much fun doing this. I am amazed at how many people message and email me about how I inspire them. On the days that someone is having a rough time I am glad that I can be a light even if its just a little. As a single mom, I hope that I’m leading by example and showing my son that anything is possible when you work hard, and stay focused.
I’d like my next steps to include partnering with larger brands for women that are in the workforce that have a following of like minded woman. I believe we are in the era where age is just a number and with a little motivation, we can do great things. I am glad to be a part of positivity when we seem to live in a world where negative vibes are so prevalent. So, on a nutshell, I am a style blogger by night and a Human Resources Executive by day. I work for a Laser Manufacturing Company in Scottsdale. I am one of the very few that gets to do what I love. I’m passionate about people and passionate about style. Hopefully, I can continue to inspire and motivate women and men in the workforce to follow their passion and dream.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In my career schooling was key. As a woman, I feel we always have to be more tenacious and never take no for an answer. I am lucky enough to have parents that never let me think there was no goal that could not be achieved. Working my way up was extremely important it taught me perseverance. Education is so important it gives you the edge, and it also shows that you can commit to something and complete it. Employers like to see their employees succeed. They also like to see initiative and strength. When I started in Human Resources, there were few women in the field that looked like me. I am so pleased to look around and see so many HR professionals that I can relate to.
The key is, never stop pushing. Ask for extra work, be engaged with your company, know what they do and always look for new ways to learn. I like to keep acquiring skills. It makes you relevant and marketable. Find a mentor. There is always someone that is willing to teach. I was fortunate to have bosses that were willing to teach me. It has served me well over the years.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Busy Style Beauty story. Tell us more about the business.
I love people and engaging with them. I love solving problems and finding solutions. As a Human Resources Director, I wear many hats. Sometimes the day doesn’t go as planned. However its how you handle a difficult or sensitive situation that determines the outcome. I am proud to work for a company that allows me to strive to be my best. We employ so many smart individuals who are a part of this little family. I care about each, and every one of our employees and I think it is my duties to always strive to be better.
As a blogger, I’d like to continue to inspire because I know how important it is to have someone that you can say I want to be like that or I admire that person. I may not know everyone I touch on the internet personally but I know I’m doing something right.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Stay focused, if this is your field or your passion never let anyone talk you out of it. Stay the course it can get rough sometimes, but the rewards are worth it.
