Conversations with the Inspiring Denise Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Black.

Denise, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest in the beauty industry began while I was in High School and still living in California. When I was younger it was something I loved to, but didn’t ever think of it as a career. About 13 years ago I moved to Arizona, and after working a variety of jobs, realized that I wanted to find work that I felt truly passionate about. So about 5 years ago I decided to finally pull the trigger and pursue makeup as a career.

At the time, I was working a full-time job, and used my time I had on the weekends to freelance as an artist for MAC Cosmetics, as well as starting my own freelance business. This gave me the flexibility to keep my day job, but start to learn about the cosmetic industry and network with successful artists. Eventually, I was able to find a part time position within my day job, which allowed me to work both jobs and not feel like I couldn’t dedicate more time to my makeup career. Today, I focus heavily on wedding clients, working on editorial, fitness and fashion shoots as well.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is never a completely smooth process. I feel that part of the growth that comes with starting a brand or a new career is embracing the struggles, the changes, and all of the unknown. If it were all easy to obtain, then it wouldn’t be as rewarding right? I would heavily recommend to anyone starting out, that make sure you just keep at it! I know it’s easier said than done, but try not to sit and compare yourself to others. If there is something you want to go out there and do, just DO IT! It’s better if it’s not “perfect” right away. That’s the only way to see what you did wrong and learn from it. Everyone is still improving and growing at whatever career path(s) they are on, but they all had to start on day one.

what should we know about Beauty by Denise? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I work as a freelance makeup artist based out of Scottsdale. I specialize in bridal, fashion, editorial and fitness. Arizona usually has 2 major wedding seasons a year so during that time, weddings keep me pretty busy. Even though I’m only able to speak for myself in this area but, I would say that the things that set me a part from other brands/artists my attention to detail. I always make it a priority to listen to what the client wants, likes/doesn’t like, and any adjustments that need to be made, in order to bring whatever their vision is to life. I like to make sure I check in with them leading up to the event to ensure that we are on the same page. I also can’t forget to mention that the main thing that sets me apart is, well, me! I strive to make my clients feel as comfortable as possible, and make their experience as fun and stress-free as best I can. 🙂 They have put their trust in me, and it’s my responsibility to make sure I execute, and exceed their expectations.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
These days I have found that I surround myself with so many friends and family members who are able to inspire me in different ways. I would say that the women have had an impact on my career would have to be fellow entrepreneurs. I am inspired by anyone that has had a vision for their career, and pursued it. Most of these people have failed multiple times, but still keep moving forward. Seeing another woman take a difficult path and succeed inspires me to continue my work, even when the struggle is real!
