Conversations with the Inspiring Danitza Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danitza Torres.

Danitza, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I knew that I wanted to be a business owner since high school when I joined and became president of my school’s DECA club. There, I got to experience what being an entrepreneur was like, managing and marketing a business, and I fell in love with the idea of someday managing a business of my own.
After high school, I took two semesters of college in hopes of getting a business degree. I started a family soon after and dropped out so I can give my full attention to my family.

While being a stay at home mom, I started to get more into makeup and skin care. I started a beauty related Facebook group so I could share my looks and tips. Soon after, I took a professional makeup course and started my career as a makeup artist in 2015.

My career grew so fast I couldn’t believe it! I was getting booked every weekend and I enjoyed every single client I worked with.

I wanted to grow in the beauty industry, be the best at my craft, and expand my knowledge and services; so I enrolled in beauty school for esthetics. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. While in school, I did my best to learn as much as I could, asked a million questions and read my book when I had downtime at home. I was also working a full-time job at the time so my days would start at 7 am and end at 2 am the following day. I slept very little and hardly saw my family. It was the hardest months of my entire life. I felt so disconnected from home, from my family. I was exhausted all the time, but I kept looking ahead. I knew all my sacrifices would pay off!

Right after graduating and getting my license, I began looking for places to start my business as an aesthetician- no breaks! I didn’t want to work for someone else so I set up a studio at home and worked out of there while I looked for my own place. I have the most amazing and understanding clients who didn’t mind coming to my house to get facials done. After a few months of searching non-stop, I found a wonderful suite and had my grand opening November 24th, 2018.

I am extremely grateful to God for every blessing he’s poured down on me, and to my clients for always being so loyal throughout my entire career. I hope to keep growing as a person and a professional and to always strive to be the best in the beauty industry.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road! It was an emotional rollercoaster. It’s tough having a full-time job while you’re trying to build a business of your own from the bottom up. So many sleepless nights, mood swings and tears. A lot of doors closing and fear of failing, but if you keep pushing through it will pay off. Don’t take breaks, don’t get discouraged if something doesn’t go how you planned. Look for mentors who are where you want to be, and don’t listen to the people who try to discourage you, even if it’s your own friends and family. You got this!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m an aesthetician! A makeup artist! A beauty guru! I specialize in skin correcting, focusing on acne. I love that every day at work is different. One day, it’s facials, the next makeup, lashes, peels, etc. I also do a lot of men’s facials & beard facials. Not many spas target men and I’m happy they can come to me in confidence to get their skin right! Men need skin love too!

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
There are so many Facebook groups for just about anything. That’s where I found most of my mentors. Social media is a fantastic place to network. I ask questions like there’s no tomorrow and I’m glad there’s always someone more knowledgeable to answer them.
