Today we’d like to introduce you to Amaryth Gass.
Amaryth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Identifying the “start” of my path would be quite difficult. One start would be my idyllic childhood in the woods of New Hampshire. Another would be a backpacking trip when I was 15. Another would be when I rode a mountain bike for the first time.
I attribute where I am today largely because of the mentors along my path – and subsequently, my (surprising) receptiveness to their advice. I am not always the most compliant person, but I was somehow open enough to let other’s advice permeate my navigation through life. I am grateful for my younger self’s subconscious insight to let these external guides nudge my path.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In some ways, my experience of life has been smooth. I define one’s experience of a “smooth” life path as the nature of relationships/decisions being affirming evidence that one is on their destined trajectory. When circumstances “click”, promote growth, and propel you forward – that is smooth. I try (and sometimes fail) to always at tap into what feels organic and intrinsic. This by no means equates to life being easy. Life can feel smooth and hard at once. But when life is hard, the deeper, juicer parts of being alive really become apparent. The act of facing the shadow is where the magic happens.
Advice for other everyone, beyond just those identifying as female, would be to do your own work. Get a therapist, face your demons for the hopes of evolving in this lifetime, go outside (ideally alone), use an internal narrative that is kind, drink more water… all of these things I struggle with on a daily basis!
What should we know about Sedona Mountain Bike Academy? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am proud of my ability to work with individuals who struggle with finding balance and become stagnant in the face of discomfort. Preferably this work occurs outdoors, perhaps on a mountain bike. I am humbled to be a part of someone’s journey to reconnect with their innate, internal resiliency to overcome challenges previously perceived insurmountable. And witnessing people reignite their relationship to the natural world is such a gift.
Most recently, this passion has been pursued in the creation of the Sedona Mountain Bike Academy. My partner and I have started this endeavor to offer individualized, effective mountain bike instruction to youth and adults. We are the only permitted, locally based company to offer mountain bike instruction in Sedona, to all ages and ability levels.
I have learned so much about my unconscious responses to the world through the creation of a business! I struggle daily to nurture a relationship with capitalism that is rooted in integrity and selflessness. A current inquiry I have is: how can this business better be an extension of my personal moral and spiritual views, working in service to others, moment to moment?
My favorite podcast is This American Life. Hearing people’s stories is the main reason I am a therapist and this long-running podcast always finds unique, intriguing ways to present other world views. In regards to mental health literature, I appreciate Bessel van der Kolk’s book, The Body Keeps the Score. It correlates our physical body’s presentation to the mental/emotional experience of the world around us.
Tara Brach is a go-to meditation teacher of mine. I am so thankful for her massive collection of free online meditations, which are a monumental resource for me.
And other resources I utilize in order to live in my truth, are my relationships. With my partner, family, friends, therapist, and living world around me. Through these connections more accurately keep my ego in check, by being in service to others.
