Conversations with the Inspiring Amanda Michalzuk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Michalzuk.

Amanda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a NASM certified personal trainer, coaching clients with a variety of health goals in Scottsdale, Arizona.

I find working with my clients to help them achieve their goals to be a rewarding endeavor. My fitness and nutrition program is more of a way of life than a diet or short-term fitness fix. My goal is to teach my clients a new way of eating and exercising so that they can maintain it long-term with or without me. And have some fun along the way!

Growing up, I was active in sports. I was introduced to “low fat” eating and dieting at a young age, and later developed an eating disorder that left me feeling emotionally low and unsatisfied with the way my body looked and felt. For the next several years I focused my efforts on long cardio sessions in the gym and what I thought was healthy eating through an extremely low fat/low-calorie diet. This left me more insecure and unhappy with all of the time I was putting into being “healthy.”

Over the past five years, I have dedicated myself to studying the science behind what makes diet and exercise plans successfully. Although, nutritional and fitness programs are endless, one simple truth remains, calories burned less than calories consumed equals the net calories lost. I launched Commit Fitness & Nutrition after helping several others achieve positive transformations in their lives and finding it as rewarding as working on my own journey. I focus on a strength-based program to build muscle that incorporates shorts bursts of high-intensity interval training (HITT) to burn calories. With an equal emphasis on a nutrition plan focused on calorie and nutrient goals which encourage flexibility. My clients are often amazed by how important the nutrition component is in achieving their goals.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I made a career switch from working as a successful marketing account manager to pursue my dream of being a fitness and nutrition coach and start my own business, Commit Fitness & Nutrition. It was scary to make such a big change, but it was the best decision I ever made. There were times when I questioned if I was doing the right thing. I knew if I followed my heart and worked hard, I would be successful. My advice to other women starting their journey in fitness and nutrition is to get experience from working with and learning from top trainers in the industry. Find your personal training style and run with it. If you are passionate about what you do, others will want to follow!

What should we know about Commit Fitness & Nutrition? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in developing training and nutrition programs for clients that are specific to their goals and abilities and will drive sustainable results. I have been successful in helping my clients meet their weight loss goals as well as other goals to be the best and healthiest version of themselves. I believe in a training and nutrition plan that my clients can sustain during their normal lives. The nutrition plan is an extremely important part of achieving success, and I make sure to educate my clients on how they can eat normal food and live a social life while making choices that will fit into their nutrition plan. My training programs are custom to their goals, ability, and body-type. I think it is very important to keep workouts challenging and fun. I am extremely proud and blessed to be able to work alongside so many great clients who have taken action in their health and fitness journey!

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
For women who are just starting their career, my biggest advice is to get out in the field and get experience. Do an internship or find a shadowing opportunity to work alongside someone in your dream position. You will gain in-field experience and you will have a great chance to network with potential employers, co-workers, and clients. You will be surprised by how many people will say yes when you ask to shadow them or start an internship.
