Conversations with the Inspiring Amanda Lugo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Lugo.

Amanda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest in wellness and holistic health began as a teenager. I read frequently and researched societal and environmental issues which challenged me to make lifestyle changes. The more people I met and experiences I encountered, I realized there is a commonality among individuals’ needs and hope for a meaningful existence. I became fascinated by the ability to alter perception, heal emotional pain, incorporate spirituality into the modern world, improve physical and mental health, as well as care for others. I discovered my purpose in the helping profession. This was the beginning of a lifelong journey to heal myself while training to make a positive impact upon others’ lives.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As the first college graduate in my family, I was faced with the task of learning how to support myself through school and construct the foundation of my career. I earned scholarships, contributed to research, worked part-time in social services, and interned at a suicide prevention center. I made deliberate decisions to encourage my most authentic self to flourish. I would advise other women to trust in their capabilities and build their brand with integrity. We have the opportunity to change the world if we are making conscious choices. The more awareness we have of who we are and what we believe, our values and intuition will dictate the next steps. There is meaning within the struggles and strength to show for it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Peak Wellness Counseling story. Tell us more about it.
My counseling career began in 2013. I worked at nonprofit integrated healthcare agencies, treating children and adults with a variety of mental health concerns. I received recognition as a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Yoga Teacher in 2019. Shortly after, I opened Peak Wellness Counseling, a private practice located in Phoenix, Arizona. The practice focuses on holistic healthcare services that allow clients to connect with mind, body, and spirit. Treatment specialties address mood disorders, relational problems, and physical or sexual abuse trauma. My counseling approach is based on dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and positive psychology. I am trained and certified in dialectical behavioral therapy, couples counseling, trauma-informed treatment, and hypnotherapy. Other services include life coaching, yoga, workshops, and retreats. A range of therapeutic methods are tailored for each individual client to achieve their goals and live meaningfully.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
Personally, I don’t use apps or podcasts. I read books from leading psychologists in the field or articles from scientific journals. I write a blog about various mental health and wellness lifestyle topics that can be found on my website. Much of the information I write about is a condensed, easy-to-read version of empirically-based research studies.
