Conversations with the Inspiring Alex Layshock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Layshock.

Alex, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Voyager Bakeshop is literally rooted in layers of butter and flour. In early 2017, a close friend and I were battling with a batch of difficult croissant dough when we started discussing pursuing baking as a business. With her encouragement, I was able to take the leap and begin putting myself out there as a baker.

I made incredible local connections that led to pop-up shop opportunities, wholesale partners, and private clients. Nearly two years later, I am still so grateful and amazed at the love and support the Phoenix community has shown me. It is the greatest privilege to make someone’s event or everyday routine sweeter.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a small business is rewarding, but it’s no easy feat. It’s one thing to be able to produce a great product; it’s a whole other animal to make sure you’re properly licensed, keeping up on taxes, and doing all the other necessary, but not so glamorous, tasks. When I started Voyager, I was coming out of a seven-year run as a middle school English teacher. Being a part of the public school system definitely prepared me for an array of things, but I really didn’t have a clue on all that went into being a business owner. Even with the ups and downs, I trudged through it all and followed my heart because I knew this was where I was supposed to be.

To other women who want to own their own business, I would suggest that you do your research and be prepared to take on every aspect to come for better or worse. It can get overwhelming for sure, especially at the beginning, but just take your time, remember to breathe, and hold your head up high, because you’ve totally got this!

What should we know about Voyager Bakeshop? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in putting a fresh spin on classic treats. From the elusive French macaron to floral cakes to homemade pop-tarts, I challenge myself to bring new light to the sweets we know and love using creative flavors and wholesome, high-quality ingredients.

I’m super proud to be the face and hands behind everything I put out there. When you order from Voyager Bakeshop, you can be confident in knowing there’s real soul behind the product and that you are supporting a WOC owned business.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Growing up in a Chinese household, food was my family’s language of love. It was how we celebrated, how we showed our appreciation, and how we connected to one another. So many of my greatest memories revolve around meals shared.

Even now, I spend nearly every Sunday having dinner at my grandma’s house, who is an incredible cook, mentor, and woman. I really feel as though my familial bond and experiences have shaped me into who I am and ultimately led me to a career in the kitchen.
