Conversations with Dr. James Wolfe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. James Wolfe.

Hi Dr. Wolfe, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I come from a family of six, raised by a single-parent mother and we were very poor. My mom taught us kids, the value of life, the value of friendship, and the value of people. In that, I have always looked at humanity in wanting to help others, but I didn’t know how. After growing up and getting mixed up with drugs, gangs, and illegal activities, I saw my life going in the wrong direction. I decided to explore, trying to find out what my purpose was. After studying the word of God in the bible, I found that purpose – to help educate others who know nothing about His word. I heard God tell me that I was a Pastor shortly after I gave Him my life in 1988.

I started my church in 1996 at the age of 29. I trained and sent three other Pastors out to start their own churches as well. Shortly after that I began to preach the word all over the world in countries like Pakistan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Europe (England, Ireland), Africa. I also did some academic teaching at the university level. In 2008, I was instructed by God to close my church, not knowing that the reason was my late wife would become ill with cancer. After her passing, I graduated with my Masters in Marketplace Ministry and Doctorate degree in Advanced Theology. During the process of getting my Doctorate degree, my thesis became the basis for the book I wrote called “The Making of a Disciple”.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it wasn’t smooth. The struggles that I have endured were when Melissa, my late wife, became ill. I was juggling a job, my former church members still needed my support, and I was attending school getting dual degrees at the same time. This was a very dark and lonely time in my life, but I remember the words of my Mom. She told me that I wasn’t dumb, I was intelligent. Those words gave me the strength to continue on with my studies and not give up. I graduated with honors (Summa Kum Laude). I never had time to really grieve my wife’s death, so after I graduated, I had to go through that process. I got through that process by staying connected to friends/family, which helped me through. Of course, my faith and relationship with God played a big role in getting me through all of the challenges I was faced with.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Pastor and a Psychologist, and I just recently became a part of a counseling business in the Phoenix area called CHOW Family Counseling Services. I am most proud of accomplishing most of my life goals as far as education and finding my life’s purpose. People know me best for my teaching skills and mentorship of others. I believe what sets me apart from others is my work ethic and my integrity. One thing I have valued my entire life is being a man of my word.

Recently I wrote a book entitled “The Making of a Disciple” and became a first-time author. My prayer is that the book educates people on what it means to be a true disciple of Christ. Because I enjoy the process of learning, writing is a natural progression to that because it allows teaching in book form. I definitely see other books in my future.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Wrestling cattle on my grandfather’s farm. We would go camping afterward to various places like Chiricahua Mountains, New Mexico, and Texas. We also visited the beaches in California.
