Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Sakowicz.
Hi Tonya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have known, for as long as I can remember, that I wanted to work with children as an adult. I started babysitting at 11 (this is when I took care of my first newborn) and although I pursued both elementary education and pre-med in college with the intention of being a pediatrician, I ultimately found my calling in the nanny world. I had my first live-in nanny job at 19 while in college and my first newborn live-in nanny job immediately after college. I never looked back. I am, by nature, curious – a researcher. And so I was continually researching about the ages and development of the children I worked with. Approximately 20 years ago, I moved to Phoenix to work with a set of newborn triplets and their family.
A few months into the job, I met the man who is now my husband and business partner. He was fascinated with what I did, working with families with new babies and helping them adapt and thrive. I worked with several other families also, including the Masche Sextuplets (born in Phoenix!), got married and had two children of my own. Through it all, I was teaching and the popularity of what I was doing was growing. It was my husband’s idea to turn it into a business in light of the growing requests. I was not as big on the idea, but he asked me this: “do you want to keep helping one family at a time, or do you want to teach others what you know and help hundreds of families and hundreds of babies?” I have never looked back. Newborn Care Solutions is now the only Internationally Accredited program of it’s kind and is a legitimate path to certification as a Newborn Care Specialist. It is also approved for continuing education by CAPPA, one of the worlds leading training organizations for doulas.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been smooth, no. Learning to work with your spouse on a business has it’s challenges and the first year we worked together was challenging. After almost six years now, we have the kinks worked out and it runs pretty smoothly. I have also had others in my industry be jealous of our success and try to cause our business harm, but we have stayed true to our vision, our goals and our core values and have overcome those obstacles. And of course, navigating the world of online education has been a learning process, but because we were in that space prior to covid, we managed well during the huge time of shift that our world has gone through.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Newborn Care Solutions?
We are an online education company specializing in training childcare professionals such as nannies, postpartum doulas, infant daycare workers and others with extensive infant experience to be newborn care specialists, working in the home with new parents, helping set them up for success. Our students are not medical professionals but have a lot of medical knowledge. They know what is normal and what is not and can help alert parents and medical providers when an issue arises. They are trained and experienced around feeding and setting up good patterns that eventually lead to quality sleep for babies and their families. We are known for quality, evidence-based education and are accredited through CACHE International out of the UK – the home of the iconic British NNEB nanny. We are very proud of that accreditation and the fact that it allows our students, with the other requirements met, to become legitimately certified newborn care specialists. Our students are in demand with parents and agencies around the world. We offer our Foundational Newborn Care Training, Advanced, Elite NCS™ and Master NCS® and one-off courses as well as private coaching.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Our students, with in-depth training, help support families during one of the most valuable and most vulnerable times of their lives and help get them off to a great start. The support this provides to families helps with stronger feeding relationships, better sleep habits and lowers the rates of postpartum mood disorders. A newborn care specialist can often be one of the single best investments a family can make in their child and their families future; we are proud to get to be a part of that process.
