Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Hobgood.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I grew up in Defiance, Ohio, a small town in Northwest Ohio. My mom was an elementary school teacher, and my dad was a social worker. They inspired me to work toward a profession that serves the community. I loved science and people so committed to medicine after high school. I completed undergrad at Ohio Wesleyan University in PreMed, Chemistry, Zoology, and Psychology and attended medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. After my first year, the Department of Anatomy asked me to participate in a research project that involved dissecting the face. Then I worked as a teaching assistant in gross anatomy to help cover school costs. Those experiences shaped my ultimate goal to become a facial plastic surgeon. I am now board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. I have been in private practice since 2004.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
During my chief resident year at Ohio State, I was diagnosed with ITP Immunothrobocytopenic Purpura. I spent the last 2 months of my residency before my fellowship hospitalized mainly at the James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State. It was challenging to complete my residency and start my fellowship with Dr. Stephen Perkins in Indianapolis. On average, adults diagnosed with ITP have about a 15-year life expectancy. There is a very low rate of remission in the low single digits. I am so blessed that in June of 2003, I did enter remission and have been healthy since that time. I was challenged by medical bills and unable to secure medical health or life insurance for years, but eventually, it all worked out.
Let’s switch gears and talk about your work. What should we know?
I operate a facial plastic surgery solo practice solely focussed on the practice of facial esthetic surgery. We offer the most cutting-edge technologies with gold-standard care in a concierge practice with one of the business’s most experienced personal care specialists. We have a very caring team, including myself as the sole surgeon, with over 25 years of experience operating, a nurse injector, Ashley Smith, RN, and a medical esthetician, Brooke Scatchard, LME. We are known for personal care and fantastic service. All patients are screened initially for candidacy for surgery through an extensive process involving photograph evaluations, medical health and safety considerations, and appropriate care and cost estimates. Patients learn about the procedures, downtimes, and expectations before the initial consultation. The consultation is very hands-on with me. I spend about an hour with each new patient to listen to the patient’s goals, consider solutions, and develop a partnership plan with each patient. My role as a partner to the patient is maximizing their objectives and managing their resources and opportunities over the following decades. Patients are all provided contact with my entire team for their expertise and my cell phone number with full access to me to help them meet their needs. We partner with nursing services for home care, overnight facilities, pre-op and post-op care, skin care, medical care, and concierge medicine services like platelet-rich platelet-rich plasma and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to speed recovery with Benessair Concierge Health and Wellness Center. I operate at Paradise Valley Multispecialty Surgery Center and North Valley Medical Center. I have staff privileges at Banner Health as well.
We’d love to hear about your fond memories from growing up.
Family time. I am very close to my older sister, who is a speech pathologist. My parents spent so much time with us, focussing on faith and family. When I was in the second grade, my dad surprised me at school, picking me up on the last day early. He and my family were in our Ford Fairmont station wagon with a trailer in tow that my dad bought from a neighbor for $150. We traveled from Ohio to California, to British Columbia, and across Canada back to Ohio through Ontario. I love hiking, mountain biking, road cycling, and exploring the outdoors.
On the medical side, during my senior year in high school, a husband and wife in our church who practiced family medicine invited me to spend a day with them in the office. Back then, it was common in a small town like ours for family doctors to attend the live births of their patients. On the day I visited, I had the opportunity to participate in a cesarian section and see a live birth in the operating room. Watching the surgery and being a part of a new baby coming into the world was truly amazing. I thought about that experience often, motivating me to be the best doctor I could be.
