Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Rometty.
Hi Taylor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Nearly 10 years ago I was a retail manager running one of the highest volume locations in the business I was working in while trying to navigate being met with grief 4 times in the same year. I lost both of my grandfathers, a really close friend, and a family dog all in the same 12 months. I didn’t thankfully have to experience grief much growing up, and we didn’t spend a ton of time talking about how it impacted us in our family.
I started having out-of-body panic attacks that started to run the course of my day and the way that I lived. I stopped eating, I stopped working out, I barely slept, and I didn’t feel connected with my general day-to-day self. My joy had been completely ripped away from me each moment I lost someone sending me deeper into pain that I never knew what to do with.
One day, my mom suggested taking me to a yoga class in hopes of helping with some of the panic I was experiencing, and little to no surprise, I had a panic attack and laid down in class for the duration of the time the instructor taught. I left feeling hopeless and broken. That night, something changed, and I slept a bit better. I was too embarrassed to tell my mom that something had worked, so I decided to give going to class another try.
During that class, the instructor repeated something along the lines of just showing up, and something just came across my mind that everything would be okay if that was all I did. Kept showing up. I went to yoga every single day after that and showed up unapologetically to my mat. Things started to get better only a month into doing yoga, and my mom came to the rescue again and referred me to a hypnotherapist.
I started seeing this hypnotherapist 2 times a week for the next few years working on the anxiousness/panic from grief and then unraveling many other things that would lead me to some of the greatest shifts in my life. Two years had gone by, and my life changed significantly. I wasn’t lifting but I was stacking yoga classes 1-2x a day and meditating. Eating differently and spending time resting for the first time in my life.
I told a friend of mine that if there was ever a yoga teacher training at the studio I went to I would do the training because I wanted to give that same gift back to people. The opportunity for people to reclaim their joy just like I had. Two weeks later, they announced training, and I became certified, and my journey with teaching began.
Another year after that a stressful year as a manager and a long vacation gave me the perspective I needed to finally walk away from mall retail. Coaching my staff and helping them grow inside and outside of the business fueled my why for stepping into a hypnotherapy role because I wanted to help people the way hypnotherapy still and once did for me.
I went to school and graduated in 2020 and took a short break before opening my business because we had lost my stepdad to a long battle with cancer. In 2022 I told my last business I was working for to kick rocks, and I never went back to work and my husband told me to start the business I always dreamed of, and Homlistic Healing Hypnotherapy & Private Yoga Practice was born.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road? In what world exactly? Haha. It has definitely been bumpy along the way. Thankfully I had a ton of background on how to run a business and lots of examples of people and small business owners who were rooting for me helping me get connected to the right people and ensure I was running a successful business.
The hardest part about running a business is that I had to go through quite a bit of transition physically, mentally, and emotionally. I had to find the perfect place to practice with the right price while my business grew. Tried out different variations of sharing and sub-leasing. I faced a ton of moments where situations were mirrors of where I needed to grow and expand in my life, and I had to take risks a ton.
The hardest part was navigating when something didn’t feel right. Sometimes, we held on out of fear. I was working for a hypnotherapy business that personally wasn’t serving me. I was driving back and forth with the yoga space I rented across town and sharing three offices with other co-workers until I built a book. Sharing offices with 3 people who already had established businesses was very stressful and a ton on my physical body.
My car started to feel like home for a while there. The thing that was the hardest was facing a lot of the emotional shifts. I wish in the beginning I had invested in a therapist to guide the highs and lows I experienced with making significantly less money and having to say no to almost everything that cost money in the beginning. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and a business is just the same.
However, I always pivoted or adjusted and never went, and I always figured out how to make sure my bills were always paid. I got a public teaching job, subbed classes for extra cash, and met a community of amazing individuals. I never gave up on myself, and when stuff was hard, I let myself cry. My husband has been my rock through everything, and now he gets to celebrate my success with me. I am so eternally grateful I hung in when it was tough.
I learned to follow my heart and to stop listening to people who tried to tell me how to run a successful business or shamed me for doing things the way I felt were good for me. Heads up for anyone asking: there are 11000000 ways to run a successful business, and it doesn’t have to be the same way the next entrepreneur does it. Trust your instincts and do what is right for you.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
I am a certified Transpersonal Hypnotherapist & Registered Yoga Instructor who focuses on walking along the journey to healing with you and helping you reclaim the joy you once felt was ripped away due to past beliefs, old patterns, trauma, stress, addictions, change, or pain.
As a yoga instructor, I help pave the way for a yoga practice that gets to meet you right where you are and discover that yoga is more than just a physical practice and that it is for everybody. I do this through prop use and modifications, customized playlists, and intentions that keep you connected to your practice and just straight enjoying it.
As a hypnotherapist, I help you reframe past patterns or beliefs that are keeping you in the cycle of behaviors. Any shift you are experiencing in life around change and the grief that comes along with it I help you identify your emotions and honor what happens for you when that shift occurs. This creates space for healing and reframing your subconscious beliefs. I offer free consultations for anyone that is interested in learning more about what I offer for either service.
What’s next?
Right now, I am focusing on continuing to give incredible care to each person that walks through my doors. I have applied to teach a yoga & hypno combo workshop at a few music festivals around the country, and I am happy to announce that I will be debuting it at a festival this summer! I am currently also working towards finding some more opportunities for continuing education and that leads to even more incredible care for my clients and students.
Along with that I personally am just working on taking care of myself. This includes doing things that I recommend for my clients, such as doing yoga, drinking enough water, taking a weekend off once a month to recharge, and taking pajama days with my tv 1 day out of the week.
