Community Highlights: Meet Sarah C. Gonzalez of Gonzalez Consulting LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah C. Gonzalez.

Hi Sarah C. , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was a child, I dreamed of becoming a professional singer. I would stand on the sprinkler box in our backyard, imagining an audience before me as I sang my heart out. Life, however, led me down a very different path.

As a first-generation immigrant and the eldest daughter, I quickly learned to take on multiple roles to support my family and community. One of my earliest memories of this was in kindergarten. I began school as an English Language Learner and, after quickly learning English, became the interpreter for my Spanish-speaking classmates. Experiences like these shaped my identity and fueled my lifelong commitment to service. They ultimately inspired me to pursue a degree in social work, where I found deep fulfillment in helping others and, later, in my work as a consultant driving transformational change.

For most of my career, I have worked in the nonprofit sector, partnering with marginalized, underserved, and under-resourced communities to co-create solutions to pressing social challenges across our state. I’ve served at every level of an organization, eventually stepping into executive leadership roles that expanded both my skills and perspective. Those experiences have made me a more effective and empathetic consultant, someone who understands the complexity of organizations and the humanity behind them. I often describe myself as a “generalist”; I know a little bit about a lot of things, just enough to get into good trouble!

Yet, as many in the nonprofit sector know, job security isn’t always guaranteed. When I was laid off, I wasn’t sure what would come next. But one of my core values —relationships —became my lifeline. I’ve always believed that genuine relationships create a kind of people power that can make the impossible possible. When my community learned I was unemployed, they rallied around me. Their support led to an opportunity to work with a Title I school district in Maryvale, where I helped establish Arizona’s first family-driven Family Resource Center within an educational setting.

That experience marked the start of my journey as a consultant and business owner, something I never imagined for myself. Consulting has since opened countless doors, connecting me with extraordinary people and communities doing transformative work. It has given me the privilege of learning, collaborating, and contributing to meaningful change across Arizona and beyond.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s a saying that I resonate deeply with: “Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations.” This grounds me in the idea that struggle is not something to avoid, but a necessary part of achieving anything truly meaningful. The challenges we face along the way often shape the beauty of where we arrive. This message has and continues to ring true for my life.

When I first started my consulting business, I felt completely overwhelmed. My approach was very much “learn as you go,” and at times, it felt like I had been thrown into the deep end. I knew it was up to me to figure out how to swim so I didn’t sink. In those early days, I made plenty of mistakes. I found it challenging to establish myself as a consultant, as most people knew me for my community work rather than the full range of skills and experience I offered. By leaning into my core value of relationships, I opened new doors, showcased my expertise, and gradually built a thriving consulting practice. Along the way, the mentorship and support of other respected consultants and business owners who shared their knowledge, access, and encouragement helped me overcome many obstacles and ultimately shaped the business I have today.

The challenges of running a business and consulting are far from over, especially now, as our sector and communities navigate immense hardships. Yet the load feels a little lighter, and hope feels more attainable, knowing I’m not carrying it alone, but moving through it alongside others. In honor of those who once supported me, especially the women in my community, I now have the privilege of paying it forward. I mentor and support others who are finding their way in consulting and business ownership, helping them build confidence as leaders and create the meaningful impact they aspire to make. Together, we can pave a smoother road.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
There are many lessons I have learned, and continue to learn, throughout my journey. However, three have been the most profound:

1. Relationships are the foundation for success: So often, relationships have been the saving grace when I have been confronted with adversity and have been the bridge to opportunity. What my experience has affirmed is that genuine, trust-based relationships are far more valuable than titles and positions. To me, they are the real currency of impact.

2. Struggle is necessary for success: Every challenge I have confronted has been an opportunity to learn and grow. It has shaped my resilience and strengthened my purpose. I have learned to receive challenges as gifts.

3. Leadership is about creating space and investing in the success of others to rise: The guidance, support, and generosity of other leaders and the community helped me grow into a confident, impactful business owner and consultant. It’s about cultivating belonging, empowerment, and partnership so that others can thrive and lead in their own right. Holding the idea that my success is your success, and your success is my success, would get us all so much farther along.
