Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin McDaniel.
Hi Robin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was drawn to physical therapy because I love anatomy and movement. I’ve worked in traditional PT clinics for nearly a decade, and that experience taught me a lot – particularly how complex human beings and their needs really are. I learned that a person’s mental health and beliefs about their healing matter just as much as the exercises we prescribe or the manual therapy we perform.
Over time, I realized I wanted to work differently. I wanted the freedom to slow down, listen more deeply, and build relationships that allow for meaningful, lasting change.
Today, my focus is on helping people move better, feel stronger, and reconnect with their bodies in a way that supports long-term health and confidence. I want people to be able to feel confident doing the things that they love.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Working in healthcare has meant navigating time constraints, overscheduling, paperwork nightmares, and the emotional weight that comes with caring deeply about people. Burnout in physical therapy (and many healthcare fields) is a real concern right now. We give a lot of ourselves, and there is always more to do.
Starting my own business has been incredibly rewarding, but it’s also come with moments of doubt and uncertainty. One of the biggest challenges has been learning to trust my own instincts and values especially outside of a traditional company and clinic. Stepping away from what’s familiar can be uncomfortable.
At the same time, I realized that every day I ask my patients to do things that scare them — to walk without assistance, to try jumping for the first time, or to do an exercise they haven’t done in years. That perspective helped motivate me to start doing things that scare me too, and to push myself outside my own comfort zone!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Outside The Box Physical Therapy?
Outside The Box Physical Therapy is built around the idea that high-quality physical therapy should be personal, thoughtful, and sustainable. I offer individualized care that focuses on how people move, live, and experience their bodies day to day.
I specialize in pelvic floor dysfunction, vestibular conditions, chronic pain, and autonomic disorders — areas that are often complex, misunderstood, and deeply intertwined with how safe people feel in their bodies. My approach blends movement science, strength training, education, and a strong emphasis on nervous system regulation and belief around healing.
What sets my work apart is time and attention. I practice in a model that allows me to slow down, listen, and adapt care in real time, rather than rushing through appointments or relying on one-size-fits-all solutions. I’m most proud of building a brand that feels human and aligned – focused on longevity, confidence, and helping people return to the activities that they love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I do consider myself lucky that life has taken me on the path that it has. A significant turning point helped launch me into starting my own business. I had helped build a traditional physical therapy clinic from the ground up, which gave me confidence and practical experience — especially in understanding how to market myself and my skills. It also allowed me to see how my approach was different, and that I had patients who trusted me enough to follow me for different concerns because they believed in what I did.
When the owner decided to close the clinic, we were given just two weeks’ notice. At the time, it was extremely scary and uncertain. Ultimately, though, it pushed me to trust myself and take a leap I had been considering but was too nervous to take for quite some time.
That period required a lot of faith that things would work out. I’ve since learned that being prepared, adaptable, and willing to take risks can turn unexpected challenges into beautiful and exciting growth. I do believe life places us on certain trajectories — but that we can also “make our own luck” through how we respond.
