Community Highlights: Meet Richard Labbate of Rocco’s Sweet Shoppe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Labbate.

Hi Richard, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The story of Rocco’s Sweet Shoppe began shortly after my son was born. Holding him, I felt a new sense of purpose that made me think differently about the future I wanted to build. I dreamed of creating something meaningful for him—something rooted in creativity, compassion, and joy. I’ve always had a deep affection for sweets, the kind that bring people together and make ordinary days feel a little more special. At the same time, I wanted to build something that aligned with my values. For years, I’ve been passionate about animal rights and the belief that the food we enjoy shouldn’t come at the cost of another living being.

That’s when the vision for a fully plant‑based bakery came into focus. I wanted to show that indulgent, nostalgic sweets could be made entirely without animal products—proving that kindness and incredible flavor can go hand in hand.

So Rocco’s Sweet Shoppe was born—a bakery inspired by a little boy with a big name, built on the belief that food can be joyful without causing harm, and fueled by the hope that one day, Rocco might choose to carry it forward. Every cookie, cupcake, and pastry is made with the same intention that started it all: to spread love, celebrate life’s sweetest moments, and leave the world just a little better than we found it.

This isn’t just a bakery. It’s a family story, a dream in motion, and a gift for the next generation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a small, values‑driven bakery comes with its share of challenges, especially in a tough economy. The constant rise in ingredient prices means we’re always adapting, finding creative ways to maintain quality.
Occasional supply shortages can cause some stress.
Also, building strong business‑to‑business relationships with other small companies can be just as challenging, as everyone is navigating their own pressures and uncertainties.
And of course, competing with corporate chains and big‑money brands can feel like an uphill climb.
But these obstacles only strengthen our resolve. They remind us why we do what we do: to offer something handcrafted, ethical, and genuinely personal—something the big guys simply can’t replicate.

We’ve been impressed with Rocco’s Sweet Shoppe, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Rocco’s Sweet Shoppe is a 100% vegan bakery built on compassion. Our signature cookies put us on the map, and our cupcakes and cookie dough have become just as beloved. We’re known for taking classic, nostalgic flavors and reimagining them in a way that’s fully plant‑based, accessible, and deeply satisfying. Whether someone is vegan or not, our goal is to create desserts that surprise people with how good they taste.

What truly sets us apart — and what I’m most proud of — is the heart behind the brand. We’re not a corporate bakery or a mass‑production operation. We’re a values‑driven, small‑batch bakery that treats every recipe, every customer, and every ingredient with intention.

I want readers to know that Rocco’s Sweet Shoppe is for EVERYONE — vegans, non‑vegans, families, kids, people with dietary restrictions, and anyone who simply loves a good dessert. We offer retail, wholesale, online ordering, and catering for events and parties, making it easy to enjoy our treats wherever you are. When you support us, you’re supporting a small business with a big heart, a father building a legacy for his son, and a brand that believes kindness should be baked into everything.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I owe so much of Rocco’s Sweet Shoppe to the people who believed in me from the very beginning.
My family and friends have been my foundation, supporting me through every step of this journey. My cousin Gina, in particular, played a huge role in shaping the vision for this bakery—her encouragement and creativity helped bring my ideas to life when they were still just sparks.
I’m also endlessly grateful to the vegan community, who has supported me since day one (and we’re proudly celebrating our 10‑year anniversary!). Their loyalty and shared commitment to compassionate living have been a driving force behind everything I do.
Thank you.
