Community Highlights: Meet Rachelle Smith of Spoonful Of Freckles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachelle Smith .

Hi Rachelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Michigan and I moved out to Arizona with my family to attend ASU. After graduation I became a second grade teacher for 6 years. During this time I received my masters at NAU for Elementary Education. In 2012 we welcomed our son into the world. I knew that I wanted to be a stay at home mom and always dreamed of opening an Etsy shop. I had always had a passion for small business because my parents operated one throughout my childhood. When I first started Spoonful Of Freckles I was known for headbands, bowties, soap pumps, wood signs and hand painted canvases. I hadn’t quite found my niche until we found out I was pregnant with my daughter. This is when I created my very first romper for her newborn photoshoot. I named it the Madeline romper and it is still one of my favorite newborn rompers to date. From that day forward I have created several different rompers and have branched out from newborn-toddler sizes. I love finding new fabric and creating one of a kind pieces that you can only find at Spoonful Of Freckles.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Moving forward with my handmade rompers has been the best decision I have made. I think one of the main struggles along the way has been getting Spoonful Of Freckles more exposure. I know that my rompers are very unique and not something you can find at your everyday store. I am thankful for social media platforms but figuring out all the different algorithms can be challenging. Another challenge is scaling my inventory because I cut and sew each item myself by hand.

As you know, we’re big fans of Spoonful Of Freckles . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Babies are one of the most precious things in the world. Spoonful Of Freckles was created to celebrate early life milestones as they go by so quickly. What better way to celebrate those milestones than with a unique handmade one of a kind style to match your child’s personality. All styles, patterns and fabrics are hand chosen, designed and created by me. This allows me to select the highest quality materials, design with the latest trends and patterns to create unique and differentiated pieces.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I have met many other small business owners and small shops through different local Arizona markets.
