Community Highlights: Meet Peter VanWolvelaerd of Vandahl Engineering & Sales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter VanWolvelaerd. They and their team shared their story with us below:

VanDahl is an advocate of ” Right to Repair” on PM service of government-owned and out-of-warranty medical equipment. The story of the right to repair begins with John Deer farm equipment. Farmers would buy their equipment (often spending $250K or more), and once the equipment was out of warranty, they would try to service and/or repair their own equipment.

The OEM would not allow the farm owners of the John Deer tractors to work on their own equipment, and with the requirement that only OEM techs, which was not only cost prohibited but also scheduling of service not timely, This has since expanded to companies like Apple.

VanDahl was once sued and won the right to repair with the verdict from the Federal court system on a suit brought by Guldmann Inc. on PM service at a Veteran Administration Medical Center. VanDahl had a PM service agreement on government-owned ceiling lifts that were out of warranty at the Oklahoma VA. In the court decision and with this verdict stated that Guldmann’s trying to cancel the VA contract with VanDahl was nothing more than a bid protest in disguise.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As VanDahl continues its PM service as a third-party service company, it must always compete with much larger and often predatory OEMs. OEMs try to control the marketplace with their policies of denying the end user to either repair their own equipment or deny the use of third-party service companies.
