Community Highlights: Meet Natassia Williamson of Aurora Health and Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natassia Williamson.

Hi Natassia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Where do I begin? I truly started in 2004 when I woke up one day on academic probation. I was failing out of college when my now-husband told me I was wasting a great opportunity. I decided to go to nursing school.

Went from academic probation to graduating with honors 4 years later. Worked as an Army Nurse for 4 years. I was a medical-surgical nurse. I had the opportunity to help develop the first inpatient drug and alcohol unit in the hospital I worked in.

I worked remotely in Alaska where I was able to do postpartum nursing as well. This is where I realized my passion for women’s health, labor and delivery, and postpartum care. I later moved to Phoenix and worked as an ER nurse and postpartum nurse. I became a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2014.

I have experience in retail health and working with the native population. I learned so much working with the native organization and gained a lot of knowledge and experience. I grew my family after becoming a Nurse Practitioner. Mom of 3. My six-year-old son and 3-year-old twin girls. It wasn’t until I experienced having a child with special needs and feeding difficulties that I decided to write a children’s book. ABC D is Ability: Getting to know kids with disabilities.

My friends in the book share their many abilities despite their disabilities. I recruited my husband to illustrate the pictures and bring my friends to life. I’ve always wanted to have my own practice but wasn’t sure it was possible. With my husband’s support, I left my job full-time in June to start my own health coaching business and eventually grow it into family practice.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My main obstacle was myself. For the past 2 years, I’ve dived deeper into myself. Overcoming my own insecurities. Changing my life to improve my overall health. Finding ways to manage my anxiety and calm the negative self-doubt.

Another challenge was going from working outside the home to working inside the home. Making the time for my business while focusing on being present and engaged with my kids. Another challenge was prior to me even developing the business or a book. Having a child with feeding difficulties. At one point, one twin had to have a feeding tube due to failure to thrive.

This ultimately led to developmental delays. She was in early intervention from 4 months to the age of 3. I was struggling to find answers. Navigating a healthcare system I worked in and realizing the difficulties patients have. Basically “Parenting through the unexpected.”

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Aurora Health and Wellness LLC. Is my own personal healing journey. My first daughter was diagnosed with anencephaly when I was 20 weeks pregnant. It’s a neural tube disorder in which the skull and brain do not form completely. The survival rate after delivery is hours to a few days. I had to make the decision to deliver early and start the grieving process or carry to term.

I ultimately decided to deliver her at 20 weeks. She looked just like her dad. I named her Aurora Lily. I didn’t know at the time I would give birth to her again and this time for her to live on forever. My goal is to help others realize the power they have to improve their overall health.

To provide support in their pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting journey. To encourage people to seek help with their mental and physical well-being. To give clients the confidence and tools they need to accomplish their own healthcare goals.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Ummm, I submitted an audition tape for America’s Next Top Model a few years back.
