Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Meek.
Hi Nancy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
About 6 years ago I founded Scottsdale Wine Club as a community for like minded folks who enjoy wine. We did events at various Scottsdale locations, and grew to about 2k members. Most tended to be business owners and entrepreneurs. I started adding custom events with exotic cars and food and wine pairings with larger venues.
I met Jonathan along the way, and he worked with me on wine pairings, sourcing great wines, and eventually brought him in as an amazing partner. (He is a Sommelier and winemaker as well).
We continued to grow, add dinners and private events, and now have become partners in owning SuVino Winery with Cory (our other partner) in Scottsdale Airpark.
We are now excited to host tastings, and private events, participate in festivals, make wine, and offer private labeling! The club itself has grown to 3k members. and SuVino had a following already as well, so we are scaling up to do more events with corporate and bridal groups, and utilize our outdoor space with exotic car shows.
It has really been a fun ride of doing something I love and enjoy with awesome folks- (both partners and members.) We just did our first wine tasting trip for the club to Santa Barbara, with Napa trips set up for next year, as well as wine centric river cruises in the near future.
Can’t wait to see where this takes us!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since I started this on my own, trying to wear all of the hats and learn the ins and out of marketing, social media, and making all of the plans for the events was a bit overwhelming. Luckily I have always loved hosting, and done quite a bit of it, so that was a plus, and bringing in great people has been instrumental.
For a while until we had the winery, finding great venues that were affordable was also a challenge. (Which is one reason we plan to rent our venue to people for a reasonable price).
Staying consistent with follow up for members, and keeping events ongoing ( Plus Covid was in there for a bit),for momentum was keeping me on my toes too, so glad to have my partners now to help!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
As a wine club, we host events and travel relating to wine. Our members meet at our events, and make new friends, taste wines from around the world, and learn about wine. There is no agenda, so we are known for the fact that everyone feels free to make genuine connections, and many have- even traveling together outside of the club. Being able to gather is so important these days, especially with upbeat happy folks who love what you love.
As a winery, we offer tastings on a weekly basis, with a variety of wines and varietals, and offer wine 101 classes regularly. The winery has a long history in Scottsdale, so we love that people enjoy our wines made here, as well as many of our partner wines. We are very proud of our personal approach in hosting memorable bridal events, and corporate team building events with a different flair.
Our private dinner wine events are a bit hit, and we often bring in very special wines from Napa and all over to pair with the gourmet meals. It is an experience for sure!
Lastly, the private labeling and custom wine making options are a big hit, and make for a meaningful personal signature for your brand or event.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I have a different outlook these days, being “mature” now, and having been around and in business one way or another for a long time.
I am very family centric, (about to be a first time grandma), and being able to have control over my time, and who I spend it with is paramount.
Money is definitely not the focus, which is liberating, if I see people happy, and having a great time at an event, I am satisfied. It is nice to to be fueled by what I want to do, not what I have to do.
So with my growing family, great partner/friends, and surrounding folks, I would say that makes me the happiest, but wine doesn’t hurt either…Lol
