Laura Gordillo

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From the moment I picked up my first disposable camera in high school, I knew there was something magical about capturing moments in time. I was the student who always had a camera in hand, documenting everything from school events to candid shots of friends. This passion for photography was more than a hobby—it was a way of seeing and sharing the world.

After high school, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in education. I loved teaching; it was incredibly fulfilling to know that I was making a difference in my students’ lives. Even as a teacher, my camera was never far from reach. I documented school events and classroom activities and created visual memories for my students and their families. Photography remained an integral part of my life, a way to connect and remember.

When I became pregnant with my first child, my focus shifted. My daughter became my muse, and through photographing her, I discovered a deeper passion for capturing life’s precious moments. My husband, always my biggest supporter, saw potential in my work even before I did. He believed in my talent so much that he created my LLC, invested in professional gear, and built a website for my budding photography business. Without his encouragement and belief in me, I might never have had the courage to turn my passion into a career.

Transitioning from a steady job as a teacher to becoming my own boss was daunting. The lack of a consistent paycheck and the demands of running a business were intimidating. But the freedom to pursue my passion and the joy of capturing beautiful moments for others made it all worthwhile. I embraced the challenge and thrived on the creative liberty it provided.

Today, I am proud to be a professional photographer. I specialize in capturing a wide range of subjects, from beautiful families and pregnancies to newborns, high school seniors, weddings, and commercial work. Each opportunity to photograph is a gift, and I pour my heart into every shot. Being my own boss and doing what I love every day is a dream come true. I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything else. The fear, the uncertainty, the hard work—all of it is worth it when I see the joy in my client’s eyes as they look at the moments I’ve captured for them. My passion for photography continues to grow, and I am excited for what the future holds.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
NO. Most definitely not. Balancing the demands of running my own business while managing personal and family responsibilities has been a real challenge for me. Implementing different strategies along the way, a lot of trials and errors to help me manage my workload more efficiently to ensure that I don’t neglect my personal life. It’s a continuous process of learning and adjusting to find what works best for me. This is definitely a work in progress.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
