Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer A. Redmon.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Pet Dental USA with our first location in Prescott Valley, AZ in 2014. As a veterinarian, I noticed that there are not many general dental-focused veterinarians around, just dental specialists in some major cities. Being overwhelmed with business up North, we opened our second location in Peoria in 2018.
Still not being able to offer enough appointments, we opened our third location in Scottsdale in late 2021. There are currently 6 veterinarians and 18 other employees at our 3 Arizona locations. Pet Dental USA will be expanding into Mesa next with a franchisee-owned location soon.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t call it an entirely smooth road, but for a start-up entering a previously unchartered area of Veterinary Medicine by opening a non-specialist, general Dental Practice, it has been pretty incredible.
Steady and even explosive growth has occurred over the last 7 years- with 3 clinics open in Arizona, a 4th on the way, and be very close to being able to offer franchise locations so other veterinarians can own and operate their own Pet Dental USA practices anywhere in the USA in the next year. Our biggest struggles have been hiring Veterinarians that want to focus on mostly dental services, as it’s a pretty new concept- with most vets being general practitioners that have to be a jack-of-all-trades.
But because there are so many human dentists, it’s likely that many vets will also realize how they can focus on dentistry and live the 4-day workweek, with no after-hours/emergency lifestyle that we can provide. Its also been a struggle for my husband and me to manage 3 locations spread out from Prescott Valley to Peoria to Scottsdale. It’s a lot of driving and staff management.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Pet Dental USA was started by me, Jennifer Redmon, DVM, in 2014 because I was frustrated with how expensive general veterinary dentistry was and how it prohibited many people from being able to get preventative work done.
This led to pets that had such severe oral/dental disease that they were suffering and having shortened life spans because quality dental care wasn’t available to area pet owners. Pet Dental USA is able to provide high-quality dental care, including free Dental exams (for evaluation prior to scheduling dental procedure) and free full mouth Dental X-rays at the time of the procedure.
Our doctors and staff are very highly trained in anesthesia and dentistry, which makes the dentistry (must be done under light anesthesia to be done properly in pets) more efficient and high quality. We are not specialists, but we are very good at what we do and love helping the pets and their people feel better!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as being able to support our family at home and the families of our employees while being able to offer a needed service in the veterinary sector. We want to treat our employees like family and our patients like our own pets.
We like to hear the laughs and music at our locations. Expansion on a bigger scale would be a nice measure of success, but it isn’t necessary to make me feel like we’ve done well.
