Community Highlights: Meet Emmanuel Onate of Jumpstartup

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmanuel Onate.

Hi Emmanuel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Though Jumpstartup was officially founded in 2020, its origins go back a few years.

In 2016, I started my first business with my brother; a residential cleaning company that pivoted to specializing in Short-Term Rentals. It was nothing fancy, and it wasn’t what any normal person would call fun, but it taught me the fundamentals of business and created more connections than I ever thought possible. More importantly, it taught me that I truly loved business, both as a concept and as an art in a sense. Now, there were things of course that I didn’t love. But, at the end of a tough day where I felt like I was ready to quit, I’d ask myself “Would you rather go back to a 9-5?” The answer was and will always be a resounding “Nope”.

Fast forward to 2020. Turns out in the middle of a global pandemic you have a lot of time to think. For the first time in as long as I could remember, I had time to deeply reflect on what I really wanted to do with the rest of my life. I’m a problem solver at heart, so I did my best to follow in the steps of many founders that I admire and set out to find a good problem to solve.

Though there are thousands and likely millions of people out there with entrepreneurial aspirations, most lack the confidence, the knowledge, or simply the time to get started. I know I lacked just about every single one of those back in 2016. Sadly, many brilliant ideas go unconceived, and it hurts more than just the would-be founder(s). We all miss out on tons of potentially amazing inventions, products, and services that never come to fruition. I knew that this was the problem I wanted to solve. And so, the idea for what would later be known as Jumpstartup was born.

I sat down one evening in June of 2020 and just started writing. It didn’t have any kind of structure yet, but I just kept typing away for a few weeks. As I wrote, it became clear that the most effective way to help others start a business would be to condense the experience and knowledge I gained from my business and mentors over the years into something practical. If I could consolidate 4 years of honest failures, accomplishments, resources, and everything in between into one concise platform, I knew it could help at least one other person go from idea to execution.

Once the rough draft was done, I sat on it for a bit and contemplated the next move. I got in touch with my soon-to-be Co-founder Jonathan Durkin who had also been working on a business of his own since we graduated from ASU back in 2016. I felt that he had the skillset and mindset necessary to take the venture to the next level. We discussed the idea at length over a series of phone calls in the Fall of 2020 and ultimately decided it had legs. His contributions to the business guide and resources proved invaluable, especially in the formative months.

In January of 2021, Johnny flew to Arizona from Jersey, and we rented out an Airbnb apartment that we referred to as “The Battle Station”. The Battle Station was converted into a start-up HQ within the first 2 hours of his arrival – fully equipped with multiple computers, monitors, fold-out tables, and printers. By the time we were done, the entire apartment had been rearranged and repurposed, down to the living room mirror, which became our handy whiteboard for the stay (sorry AirBnB host!). When it was all said and done, we probably got 6 months’ worth of work done in under 3 weeks and had laid a solid foundation for where Jumpstartup is today.

Almost a year after its official inception, Jumpstartup has established valuable connections with the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, local networking groups & professionals, and has even been accepted into ASU’s Venture Devils Program where we will compete with other startups for a very generous $20,000 in additional funding this Winter! We soft-launched our services about two months ago and are currently still in beta, testing several features and consistently expanding our library of resources for entrepreneurs. We plan to have an official launch before the end of Q4 2021.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, we’ve had a smooth road in terms of business development. Everyone we have connected with has been incredibly helpful and has pointed us in the right direction on this journey.

Our obstacles and challenges have arisen out of how busy we all are. We still own other businesses and tend to work on several projects simultaneously. Johnny debuted his smart-bike rental business, Beach Bike Boys on the Jersey Shore this summer after being delayed by the pandemic last year. It was an extremely successful launch and has kept him very busy over the last few months. My own company, Complete Cleaners has been consistently picking up new clients in 2021. Compounded with my work as a Business Consultant, there have been times when deadlines have been missed for Jumpstartup.

Nevertheless, we have taken our setbacks in stride and have made plenty of progress overcoming the time constraints. Our new C.M.O. Chris Chavez has done an excellent job of picking up a lot of the essential tasks in the marketing and PR realm and has been a huge help in overcoming our challenges. We are lucky to have him on the team.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Jumpstartup?
Jumpstartup is a resource platform for new, student, and prospective entrepreneurs designed to navigate them from idea phase to execution in their business venture. We provide a comprehensive guide & course, professional partners, a founder’s network forum, and in-house a la carte design services to our members.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m pretty much an open book, so I’d say there’s not much that would surprise people about me. When I’m not working on anything business-related, I’m usually either playing soccer, basketball, or being a giant nerd. I enjoy heavy board games, card games, and just about anything highly competitive that I can get my hands on. Completely unsurprising to my close friends – I kind of hate to lose.

As far as Jumpstartup goes, I think it would surprise people to know that it is more than just an online course or guide for starting a business. We aim to be synonymous with “starting a business” entirely, and our vision is for Jumpstartup to be the go-to resource that entrepreneurs reference when taking the critical leap from zero to one.
