Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Lambert.
Hi Elizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
UltraViolet was actually just my first ever cosplay that I tried out. I got super bored during the quarantine and was really invested in making Tiktoks. Being that I’m a huge Marvel fan, I really wanted to do a Spiderman/Venom cosplay. But the Leo in me would let me just order a suit and call it a day. I started brainstorming and experimenting with different colors and landed on this knock-off purple suit from wish and before I knew it, the posts I was making with my superhero started taking off.
People started asking for her background, what her story was, and I couldn’t really tell them. I would just say “Oh, I’m an actress and I just have years of improv experience. Haha.” But then it hit me.
People really thought she was a real superhero.
So, I posted a video asking for help getting the comic going, found an amazing team, and the little pilot script I made for UltraViolet (at the time, I was into making little films) ended up turning into the very first issue of our comic.
Once we posted our comic on WebToon ( It’s like YouTube for comics) We ended up getting noticed by the creators at Webtoon and impressed them enough to land on their ” up and coming ” list, which gave us 100s and 1000s of views.
11.2 million views on one of our videos, 155 physical copies worldwide, and 1,000s of smiles later.
We’ve opened up our own shop, inspired people to create heroes of their own, and are currently working on our second issue!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Tons and tons of struggles came up during our process! But with that being said, smooth roads make the journey less exciting!
We had to change up her suit and had to make sure that we weren’t infringing on any intellectual property. It took us months to find a supplier who had reasonable pricing for a self printed comic. (Some people were asking up to 3,000 dollars for 50 books… CRAZY.)
We had people who were upset that our main characters were all women in the first issue, trolls, people deliberately leaving negative ratings so our ratings would lower on the Webtoons platform.
I would have to say that Social Media burnout has been the hardest struggle of it all. Keeping a business going while having no energy to do it, and knowing you have fans waiting for more content is hard. But it’s one of the only things that’s getting us up in the morning,
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about TheUltraVioletUniverse?
So UltraViolet is a comic book written for POC, women, and anyone else who doesn’t feel represented in this day and ages media. Our main goal is to take the mental health struggles and diverse backgrounds to comics without making them someone’s personality, which has definitely set us apart from the pack. For example, on any page you turn to in our book, not one background character looks the same. Someone can definitely open up a random page and find a character that looks like them. We’re known for being one of TikTok’s biggest indie comics, and we’re still shocked by it to this day. The team and I are doing this 100% by ourselves. The drawing, the packaging, the shipping, the signing, the promoting. It’s all of our flesh, blood, and tears and we could not be prouder of that in itself.
We currently have a website up with merchandise that’s pretty cheap (Ranging from $7-$29) and 100% of the proceeds go back to the artist that drew it! We’re currently working on our second comic book issue, Which the preview is up for on Webtoon called “Fun In the Sun”, where we’re introducing our newest Main Character, Kaja Bylilly, who is our first ( but definitely not last ) Non-Binary character! We’re also currently raising funds for it, and need to raise $5,000 in 6 days, which we’ve raised $1,200 so far!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The best thing I like about our city is the convenience of everything! Arrowhead Mall is a great place to clear my mind and find inspiration, and for the most part, everything is tucked away and pretty quiet over here. The thing I like the least, however, is that it’s not as small business-oriented as Downtown Phoenix would be, so a lot of people in this area don’t really tune into the importance of supporting small businesses.
