Today we’d like to introduce you to Dread Queen
Hi Dread, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a creative, at the age of 22 my love for the art of styling locs grew on me! I had always been a hairstylist, but redirected my focus on strictly being a loctician. I learned how to twist and get the foundation of different styles from YouTube. I continued to practice my craft until I became one of the best in my home town of Indianapolis. Competing and winning several hair competitions and showcasing my work in hair shows. I moved to Phoenix at the age of 28. I also became a traveling loctician that same year. I have done hair in 22 states so far. I’ve managed my salon (Dread Queen’s Loc Lounge) in Phoenix for five years now. With hard work and dedication I was blessed with the opportunity to do Eric Burton’s hair for the Grammies. My goal is to continue to elevate and express my love for art through my loc styles.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course my journey was not the easiest! I have faced many obstacles along the way such as financial struggles, balancing life, and being hit with several “No’s” before I had gave myself the “Yes” I needed. I learned that in order to succeed you have to believe in your self no matter the circumstances. Always put in the work and effort to reach your goals. And never forget to celebrate your accomplishments along the way!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Dread Queen’s Loc Lounge is one of the best Loc salons in Phoenix. I offer loc services such as retwists, styles, detox, and repairs. I also offer beauty services such as, facials, makeup, waxing, etc. You can also do a little shopping as you get serviced as I sell women’s clothing and accessories as well. A one stop shop as some would call it. I’m known for my creative styles and how fast I can get a clients hair finished. I’m proud to be able to show the world what I’m capable of, along with leaving a smile on so many people’s faces.
What were you like growing up?
As a child I was very quiet and kept to myself. Pretty much extremely shy. I enjoyed reading and participating in math competitions. As I got to middle school I ventured out and played sports and joined different clubs such as basketball, cheerleaders, and student council. I learned how to braid when I was in 5th grade. I carried this talent into my adulthood, braiding all of my friends hair along the way. When I made it to college, I became accustomed to the things I loved to do such as dancing, hair, and staring different business ventures.
