Community Highlights: Meet Danielle Petty of 90s Babes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Petty.

Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a deep love for technology and ended up pursuing a degree in Computer Science. I was later hired at Google and was convinced I would be there forever… but after several years of working there, I got together with one of my good friends and coworkers at the time and we decided to leave and start our marketing agency.

We built Digital Radar in 2016 and had been working there for several years when my business partner was recruited to act as the Director of Marketing for a large web3 and NFT technology company. At the time, I had very limited knowledge about crypto, NFTs, or web3 and had my reservations, but my business partner was persistent that I should dive into the space and explore this new technology and the opportunities that exist.

I jumped straight into research mode about the blockchain, crypto, and NFTs which is where I found myself gravitating towards different projects in the space and the communities that were being built around them. There were tons of different projects at the time, and some of them were becoming very profitable businesses as well.

I remember it was around August of 2021, and there was a stat going around on Twitter that said “Only 5% of NFT projects are owned by women”, and that was all it took for me to decide that I wanted to be a part of changing that and help carve out space for women in this new and emerging technology. My business partner and I were immediately on board with the idea of taking our marketing skills and what we knew about the blockchain, web3 technology, and building community to create a project centered around empowering women and helping onboard more women into web3.

We began ideating around concepts and ideas for our project, what pieces were important to have included in our own sales milestones roadmap, and what we wanted our project to represent for the community we would build. One thing we all agreed upon was that there was a significant lack of representation of women in the space, much like there has been in the technology space in general, so we decided we wanted the art to be centered around women. And we also really wanted it to be something that people could find identity behind and resonate with, regardless if they knew anything about NFTs or not.

Once we started talking about different decades, the 90s was immediately the preferred choice for so many reasons, not only were many of us born in the 90s…. but there was a technology boom that happened in the 1990s. Our generation remembers what it was like to play outside until the streetlights came on and yet were also the same ones teaching our parents how to use the family computer. And now again in web3 we are seeing new technologies emerge and watching how it unfolds all over again.

Our project launched in March of 2022 and since then we have had the pleasure to travel across the country and speak at 10 different conferences, we’ve hosted a series of incredible 90s parties, onboarded hundreds of new women to NFTs, as well as donated over 10,000 copies of the I Love My Happy Momma book written by Blake Nolan to local hospitals and maternity centers focused on helping mothers who may be struggling with postpartum. I am beyond grateful for the opportunities NFTs and web3 have given me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many struggles along the way. One of the first was during the time of our launch, the war in Ukraine had just begun and our teammate and artist, Erika Vasylovka, was living in Lviv, Ukraine at the time. This causes a ton of fear, stress, and concern. Our main focus was getting this project live so we could help her and her family get to safety.

Additionally, the NFT market is still new and emerging, which means constant change! We had to be extremely agile leading up to our launch and throughout to make sure we were staying up with changes in the market. Launching a startup has so many challenges in itself, but it was especially difficult to do with the space still being so new.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The 90s Babes is an NFT collection that celebrates our history as agents of change to guide more female rebels into this most exciting phase of the digital revolution.

NFTs are designed by women. Celebrating women. Benefitting women. Empowering women. Women with the grit, grace, and guts to capitalize on this new digital opportunity. The same generation of women who’ve been here, leading the digital charge all along.

We believe that empowered women can transform lives and truly change the world. And global change starts within local communities. That’s why our mission — to onboard more women into the NFT and web3 spaces — is designed to help empower women and families to become agents of change in their local communities.

To that end, we are proud to have donated $40,000 from our mint funds towards the purchase of the I Love My Happy Momma book, focused on bringing support and awareness to postpartum depression for pregnant and new moms. These books will be distributed by our team to organizations dedicated to caring for women through mental health initiatives, spiritual healing, and postpartum care, to name a few.

Our community is filled with incredible nostalgia-loving individuals who love to celebrate all things the 90s. We host movie nights, trivia, and live events to connect with our members across the globe.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Our industry is rapidly changing. We are seeing new trends emerge daily and we’re expecting to see big things in the next 5-10 years. Big brands like Starbucks, Nike, Adidas, and more are already adopting NFT technology, so we are proud to be among the first and excited for the future.

I expect to see more brands and companies taking advantage of the technology and finding more ways to get users onboarded safely into the crypto space.
