Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam & Amber Wong.
Hi Adam & Amber, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Our story together starts back in 2005 at Paradise Valley Community College in COM100. It was there that we first met, then started dating a little while after. We were both pursuing degrees, Amber’s focus was on Psychology, and Adam’s was on Business. Fast forward about 10 years, Amber held a Bachelor’s in Psychology from ASU and Adam a Bachelor’s from NAU and an MBA from GCU. We were both deep into our careers and striving in our respective fields.
Amber was working for the largest real estate franchise company in the Southwest and was involved in a myriad of areas such as event management, leading teams, hiring, human resources, marketing, managing operations, and strategic organizational development. While Adam was working for a global leader in employee development, where he led multiple teams and started to form the vision of our future company, Rockstar Workforce.
On May 28, 2017, we got married in beautiful Temecula, California amongst all of our best friends and family. Soon after, we got hyper-focused on two things; starting our business and having a baby. Adam immediately started working on his succession plan out of his employer and started working on the first phase of launching Rockstar Workforce, which strived to help companies hire great people and develop future leaders.
In 2018 we officially launched the business as Adam transitioned out of his employer. We also welcomed our first child, Hudson, into the world just weeks after the business launched. Needless to say, it was a crazy time, running a new business and raising our first baby. Our goal was to have Amber join the business full-time within two years. However, we grew more quickly than we imagined so Amber ended up leaving her full-time position and joining our business in early 2019. We’ve worked diligently at growing the business but without sacrificing our #1 focus, which is our family. In August of 2020, we had our second baby, our daughter Harper. Fortunately, both of us share the same vision for our family, which is spending a great deal of time together and being very present in our children’s lives, every day. This is one of the key drivers for starting our own business.
We started our business after recognizing a huge need in the workforce. Most businesses struggle with hiring great people and developing future leaders. We originally went to market helping companies solve both of the these complex challenges. Recently, we made a conscious and strategic decision to double down on leadership development as this is the part of the business that has really taken off over the last few years. We specialize in long-term leadership development programs, with both public courses as well as private company courses. To date, we have several hundred graduates and our Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) is to develop 10,000 Rockstars.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Early on we faced normal challenges that many new businesses face such as limited capital to grow, and concern of cash flow. Fortunately, after about six months in business, our cash was stable and we finished our first year profitable, which was an accomplishment in itself. The more pressing challenge was how to grow. Our leadership programs are very specialized and take 6-12 months to train and onboard a facilitator to lead our programs. We recently hired our first full-time leadership program facilitator and we’re in the middle of training and onboarding her to manage her own programs, and we’re very excited to see how she and her new role progresses.
As business owners, a constant challenge is work/life balance. We strive to spend a lot of time together as a family and it can be difficult to balance our family time with growing the business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Most businesses struggle with hiring great people and developing leaders. At Rockstar Workforce we created a framework to eliminate bad hires and a program to develop leaders, which allows you to focus on what’s important and grow your business.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
As a company, we’ve identified our competitive differentiators that allow us to shine and make the most impact with our customers. In no particular order, our differentiators are:
Intellectual Property – we’ve designed half-day and full-day workshops around 12 leadership topics that most leaders encounter. Our IP allows us to tailor programs to the specific needs and even specific industries of our customers.
Co-Branding Material – since we own our IP, we’re able to cob-rand co-brand all of our material with our customers, which has proven to be a huge selling point for many of our customers. They like to see their logo and brand shine through in our material.
Discovery Process – we partner with our customers to survey their people in a variety of ways, to discover the areas their leaders need to develop. The discovery process acts as the roadmap for creating the customers’ leadership development program. It’s truly tailored to what they and their employees feel they need to develop further.
