Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Black | Matejka. (DJ | Realtor)
Yvonne, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Originally from Canada with a Czech background, I started my music career in Los Angeles alongside manager and Friend Joseph Christopher | Dakota West Recordings. My taste in music ranges from techno, deep-house to energetic progressive. When I’m not DJing, I am a full time Realtor in Arizona.
In addition to DJing, I also write lyrics and sing on all of my original songs. So far I have released over 80 original tracks and numerous remixes on different labels, which are available on iTunes, Spotify, Beatport.com or anywhere else music can be purchased. Mixes are up for grabs on my website www.YvonneBlack.com.
I have performed alongside – Paul Van Dyk, Harry Choo Choo Romero, George Acosta, Morgan Page, Nadia Ali and many more. Previous performances include; Winter Music Conference (Armani/Sirius Radio/Monster Energy VIP events), Exchange LA, The Love Festival, Avalon Hollywood, Bar None (Vancouver), Orleans Arena and Axe Mansion (Mexico City). I am a Spotify & Insomniac Artist, represented by Dakota West Recordings. Sponsored by Hint Water and featured on Sirius XM since 2007.
Music plays a large part in my life, but finding and selling homes for people is the other endeavor that brings me a lot of joy. Like music, real estate can be an emotional journey and I love providing a service that has so much impact on people’s quality of life.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create music/DJ at night clubs and special events. My inspiration is the music and hope my music also inspires people. With inspiration being the goal, when I develop music, I aim for each track to evoke a response from those who listen to it. From an energetic song to one that is more low key, music should make listeners feel and respond. Noting that, I created a yoga album to help promote a healthy lifestyle and the gentle reminder that we must take care of ourselves before we focus on anything else. Our world is so automated now, that I really wanted to use music to channel emotion, which I find is becoming a lost art.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Like anything, I think the biggest challenge is always setting yourself apart from others. Additionally, it can be a challenge to release music because so many big labels may be looking for more popular artists. So I created a label (Dakota West Recordings) with Joseph Christopher to release the music that we’re passionate about. Artists must constantly brand themselves and be different, but still stay true in a sense to who they are. I know that sounds contradictory, but artists must develop music that allows fans to know it’s them but does not sound like a replica of the last track.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I am a resident DJ at SumoMaya in Scottsdale every Friday night. Take a listen to my mixes and productions here: www.YvonneBlack.com, Spotify, Soundcloud, iTunes and Beatport.com
