Today we’d like to introduce you to Yu Yu Shiratori.
Yu Yu, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I don’t consider my upbringing or overall story to be particularly unique- I went through the classic phase of the awkward teenager, full with braces, acne, and loitering at strip malls. Growing up, my parents were constantly working, so during the summer my best friend and I would spend the days making art and bad jokes. Some people would say those were the salad days, but I think the salad bar is still full.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I started out screen printing, but over the years, I began doing metal work and embroidery. It has been incredibly fun to translate my work through multiple mediums. When people ask why I do what I do, I think to myself, what else would I be doing and regardless of the endless opportunities available, I would not feel complete unless I can contribute my work to the collective consciousness.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success is a mirage. When you set goals, you can reach them but when you are at the finish line, what’s really finished? I think success is knowing that it is a meandering path and knowing that it isn’t done alone.
