Today we’d like to introduce you to Yohanna Wendt.
Yohanna, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am from a family of eleven children. Being seen and heard was sometimes perceived as impossible. Now being a mother of my own children and having a child who has special needs the importance of giving everyone a chance to be heard and understood is of much more importance. Through my photography, I am able to reach out to others and give them a chance to see themselves as beautiful, understood and heard. It is one small gift that I can give to those around me.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I want to share a story through each picture that I take. Everyone knows the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” what I like to say is that “every picture is just a glimpse of the emotion buried within.” Being in front of a camera is uncomfortable for most people. They feel vulnerable and insecure. My goal is to encourage them and show them that it is okay to be uncomfortable, but it is also okay to open up to those around them and to share the gifts that they have.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Never give up and always continue to move forward. Always keep yourself vulnerable never close yourself off. I wish I had learned to not listen to fear sooner. Fear of being not accepted, fear of not being good enough. To look at each of those fears in the face and say ‘I am accepted because I accept myself and I am good enough.’
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
