Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Taft.
Tori, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
When I was in high school, I had this amazing art teacher. She believed in me, pushed me beyond my comfort zone and told me that I had a lot of potential if I decided to continue in this field. I soon had to ask myself that daunting question…”What do I want to do with my life?” Four years later I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. I was scared. I was not sure where this was going to take me but I wanted to take a chance! All I knew was that I was good at this “art thing” and that I would love any job that would allow me to express my creativity. A year after graduating I opened an Etsy shop, started an Instagram and began investing in myself. My own name. My own product! About 8 months after opening my shop I received a call from a previous employer who said that their Media team was expanding and that they have been keeping up with my artwork through my Instagram account. They thought I would be a perfect fit for their new Design Specialist position! I have since expanded to the digital platform and continue to learn new things and face new challenges every day! I can now look back and confidently say that I made the right decision investing in my talent!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create unique, hand-made pieces of art. My medium varies along with the canvas it is created on, however, the most popular items sold on my shop are my hand-painted shoes. Although I accept all design recommendations, my preferred content are nostalgic or movie-related designs! I am a huge fan of any and all animations, especially the darker, eerier animations such as Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride or Henry Selick’s Coraline! The creepy aspect of these films has always intrigued me and I accept (and admire) that it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Of course, I am not limited to this type of work! I also draw portraits, paint landscapes, design logos, billboards, ads, graduation caps, collages, and more recently, I’ve hand-paint jean jackets! My talent spectrum broadens every year, who knows what I’ll create next!
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
A successful artist is one that doesn’t let fear control their motives; they follow their desires and aspirations to be the best, learn from the best and accept constructive criticism while still staying true to what they believe in. A successful artist is open to learning, expanding their horizons and saying yes to all promising opportunities that come their way!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
