Today we’d like to introduce you to Timm Chapman.
Timm, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born in the United Kingdom but grew up in the Great White North of Canada.
Since I developed my first roll of film in Grade 8, I was hooked on photography. I took classes each year afterward and was making color prints in trays by the time I graduated Grade 12. I loved the creativity that capturing light could offer and spent the next decades learning how to ‘see’ the world as a photographer.
As my passion for the art was always deeply rooted, I didn’t want to feel compromised in my vision to photograph things that other people wanted me to. Instead, I wanted to capture the world as I saw it. As such, I never used photography as a career path, but instead, kept it always close at hand on the side, when I needed a creative release from my corporate life.
I was very fortunate that my corporate career allowed me to travel internationally to all corners of the globe. My camera was always with me, and I’d often take a vacation and/or extend business trips to visit a place I’d never been, recording my experience each time on rolls of film.
I shot many different places and subject matter over those years, but it was the diverse landscapes that called to me the loudest. Soon I was planning trips specifically to capture spectacular landscapes off the common tourist trail and seeing sights that few would ever see. From icebergs to rainforest caves to towering desert sands and everything in between, my wanderlust has never waned.
In 2007, after amassing a large collection of images from my travels and three years after moving to the Phoenix area, I began showing my photographs at galleries and art shows in the Southwest USA, as well as licensing them to publications across North America. The reception to my work was strong, and I started building a base of collectors. Finally, in 2012, I made the decision to leave the shirt and tie in the closet, walk away from Corporate life, and focus entirely on photography; capturing the world as I see it.
Today, I have a comprehensive online portfolio and travel across the country, showing & selling my work at fine art shows. My work can be found in private collections, and businesses around the globe.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a fine art landscape and travel photographer. The majority of my work is captured on film using a 6×9 format, which is four times the area of standard 35mm film. Although I also have digital cameras, I prefer the discipline and inherent beauty that film affords. Film requires careful thought and care in the capturing of each image, and its grain has a softness in its resolution, which I find more pleasing to the eye than the super sharp-edged world of pixels.
People know the style of my work as clean and uncluttered portraits of the landscape. It is usually very clear where the focal point is in my imagery. The image may be of something known, but unfamiliar. Something common, seen in an uncommon way, or perhaps something unfamiliar, but real and unbelievable. Each image I set out to make is designed to stir. The image may evoke an emotional response from your gut, your heart, your mind, and sometimes all three. I try to capture images that are captivating; that engage and beckon you to interact. The goal is to have a piece of art that you will notice; not something that becomes anonymous on the wall after a short time.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success for me is derived solely within. Whilst accolades are always nice, as an artist, I have always sought to capture images and produce work that makes me happy. That comes from never staying complacent, but instead always learning, growing, and exposing myself to new adventures. I feel so fortunate that there are so many out there that support me in this endeavor and have welcomed the world ‘as I see it’ into their lives; thereby allowing me to continue on this journey.
I feel that if you judge your success solely on ‘how many sales’ you make in your work, then you will tend to lean more to producing work that is market driven instead of creatively driven, which can have a negative impact on your long term creativity. You might be successful in business, but less fulfilled as an artist.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
