Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Ingersoll.
Thomas, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up racing motocross. I spent about 15 years on a bike with no real acknowledgment of the art world. As I left high school and entered college, I quickly faced the vexing task of finding a career. In this time, I was still racing and began to take my dad’s old film camera to the race track to document my friends. I had no clue what I was doing and was wasting money on film. I decided to use one of my electives to take a photography class, and immediately became intrigued. After a bad crash that compressed my spine, failing any class non-photo related, and still being unsure what to commit my life to, I switched my major to pursue photography. As I transitioned from hobbyist to full time, I began to shoot weddings to make an income. I loved being paid to work for myself, but I was having a hard time feeling creative. Through the years, I transitioned into a commercial and editorial photographer where I felt more at home. I became fascinated with telling peoples stories and visually communicating a message. Over time I built relationships with a few publications to become a writer for a few photography websites as well as an ambassador for several photography brands. Struggling to find current and applicable curriculum in school and wanting to provide better education to the photo community, I started the Blok EDU program at Blok studio. I recently launched a production company (Litebox) with Blok studio owner to expand on the support we provide creatives.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have a hard time articulating myself, which is why I like visuals so much, but I am a commercial and editorial photographer. I am captivated by people, what they do, why they do it, and how they do it. I want to translate those experiences or process into a photograph. I want to explore their personality or craft and communicate that. The point of view can differ image to image; sometimes it’s how I see them, sometimes it’s how they see themselves. Occasionally I like to be the narrator of the story, creating a story, and finding the right person to play the character for the image. From here it’s how can I bring quality, technique, and individuality into the equation.
Each photo has a different message, each person is different, each story is different, but maybe through my work, my audience will explore all the intricacies it means to be human and create bonds instead of intolerance.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I define success by your ability to create change, big or small in a constructive manner.
I believe it is imperative to be disciplined, adaptable, patient, respectful, intuitive, purposeful, and kind to be successful.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
