Today we’d like to introduce you to Thistle.
Thistle, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Ever since I was a kid I’ve been creative when it came to the performing arts, I really started to grow in high school though, I was in theatre, dance, and choir. I dreamed of being on Broadway one day, so I did everything I could to better my skills for it. However, I was born with a couple of heart defects, and it made obtaining my dream more difficult. When I was fifteen, I had heart surgery to try to correct some of the issues, but with little luck. I thought my career with the performing arts was done, finished.
Nearly a year after that, I picked up my sister’s ukulele, and rediscovered my passion for the performing arts, and realized nothing could take it away from me; not even my heart. So I sucked for a while and taught myself how to play. Three years down the line I picked up a guitar and taught that to myself as well. I was creating music and art for years, but finally took it to Instagram when I was eighteen. It was there a little venue in Buckeye called The Loft discovered me and invited me out to present my art and do their open mic.
I was absolutely thrilled to be on stage again, and this time, nothing was stopping me from performing.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I paint along with playing guitar and ukulele. I paint mainly little series that tells stories if you look deep into it, or if you were to ask me what the different pieces represented. I love storytelling, you’ll find a lot of my work involves stories; such as my music and painting series’.
I really hope that people can take away the little pieces of myself that I put into my paintings and music. Such as my painting series “Scream for a Better Tomorrow” looks a lot into my past and my mental health. From my painting “Shadows” to my painting “Night Terrors”, it all represents a time in my life where I felt small, powerless, and voiceless. Which is the exact reason I called the series “Scream for a Better Tomorrow” was because it finally gave me a voice.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I find my biggest challenge is getting exposure. Getting out and doing shows when you don’t really have many connections is tough. That’s why I try so hard to tag my posts to try and get them out there tot he best of my ability.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Right now I’m solely on Instagram @thistle.leave.art but I will post updates on there such as shows, and later I’ll be posting about an album in the making that people can pre-order. (Again, haven’t posted about it yet, but I’ll keep my fans updated!)
