Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Ebright.
Steven, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Twenty-five years ago, I purchased my first point-and-shoot film camera, simply as a desire to photographically document my hiking trips. During my first time out, I was immediately drawn to the quest of image composition. This began my love for the art of photography. I began to develop my own style of seeing the Arizona landscape. My focus of interest, from the beginning, was to highlight more intimate forest scenes in nature, rather than the ubiquitous grander scale landscapes of the desert. I quickly moved up to an SLR camera and began to learn photography through trial and error and by reading books on the subject. In those days, I was shooting Fujifilm Velia 50 slide film and several different black and white negative films. There was a certain nostalgia to my regiment of purchasing film and the subsequent processing at Tempe Camera. These were formative years that I will always remember with fondness. A key factor in my photographic leaning was, of course, finding places in the Arizona landscape to practice my craft. Many of these locations have become cherished places that I return to each year.
Several years ago, I made an equipment change to Fujifilm cameras and lenses. This became a very important step for my creative process. Fujifilm is producing very special imaging products that I am proud to use.
My photography schedule follows the calendar and seasons with Fall and Winter being my favorite times to make images. I also enjoy late Summer explorations into the mountains. Each October, you will find me somewhere in the Arizona landscape at the start of a new season of photographic discovery.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
From the beginning of my nature photography, I began to develop my own working philosophy regarding the focus and use of my images. As someone who believes in and who follows the God described in the Bible, I wanted to illustrate His reality and truth as the Creator through my images of His creation. My main goal is to credit God for the beauty of His creation, and I hope people will be drawn to that.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I believe the role of artists has remained the same in terms of expression through artwork. Art is a critical lifestyle endeavor for each individual’s pursuit of creative speech. For me, as society becomes more and more secular, the need to point to God, as the creator, becomes increasingly necessary.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I post my images on Instagram, 500px, Twitter, Facebook, and my own blog site.
