Check out Sirrena Griego’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sirrena Griego.

Sirrena, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My interest in visual art, particularly photography, started at New School for the Arts & Academics, my high school. I loved working in the darkroom with film; working with my hands a lot and feeling more involved with how the film was processed and how my prints were developed gave me great satisfaction. This led me to attend Arizona State University where I pursued a BFA with a focus in photography. I would say my heart and curiosity lies in the magic of what a photograph could mean and the feelings it invokes in a viewer, more so than the technical aspects of it. Many of my images have to do with the exploration of my inner workings; how I am influenced by my surroundings, the people I love and what family means. I’m drawn to portraiture often, mostly non-conventional and “moment” pictures.

Besides my personal work, I’m also active in a group called Femme Fotale, which is a publication based in Phoenix for women and gender non-conforming photographers to showcase their work.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m a visual artist, and my medium of choice is photography. I have a love for film; I mostly shoot 35mm, but I also break out my 4×5 camera every now and then. I’ve thought about my reasoning for preferring film or digital…there is something more precious and fleeting with film versus digital. When you’re shooting a roll of film, you’ve got a limited amount of chances to make something interesting. I think it makes me wonder more about the moment I’m about snap. I’ve also always loved the process of printing a photograph. I’m kind of an introvert, so the idea of being alone in a darkroom is really great, in my opinion.

My inspiration is within my personal life. I want to make images of the people closest to me. I also make a lot of work that has to do with myself, as well. I think photography can be a way of self-reflecting on your emotions; a way to see what it is that is important to you. At this point in my life, I am interested in the idea of growth, the flaws that we keep cultivating in ourselves, the reasons why, and the challenge of achieving “happiness”.

Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
The biggest challenge is trying to support yourself financially, while still being true to your passions and making time for what is important.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
