Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Scriver.
Sierra, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m a photographer based in Arizona. I don’t really base myself out of one city because I’m honestly all around town! I grew up in Surprise, but I am currently pursuing my Bachelor’s at the University of Arizona (bear down!). I also spend a lot of my time in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. I feel like I’m in a different city every day!
Photography has always been a creative outlet for me. Most little girls in my class danced or drew pictures, but for me, I made my friends get dressed up so I could take their photos at our local park. I would use my pink Motorola RAZR; or if I got lucky, I could sneak out with my mom’s 5-year-old point-and-shoot camera that only had pictures from our 2002 family vacation.
I made the jump to begin photography professionally a little after I got my first hand-me-down DSLR (My first real camera). It’s been about three years since then, and I’ve taught myself everything I know. I’ve never had second thoughts about photography as my career.
It’s definitely tough owning your own business as a college student, especially when you work two other jobs. I’ve had to learn real quickly how to properly manage my time and prioritize things. I constantly have to remind myself that school comes first, even when all I want to do is go out and shoot! I graduate next year, and cannot wait to see what more I will do with my work!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create magical and timeless moments for the free spirits, the wildly in love, and those who aren’t afraid to get a little dirt on their feet! I’m not just your photographer but your personal wingman and bff. You might find me cheering you on behind the camera or fixing your hair like your mom would. Me and my clients are always the loudest ones in the area, usually because we’re laughing too hard.
One thing I REALLY believe in is community over competition. I am always open to helping new photographers get a start, and I always hope someone more experienced than me would do the same if needed. Crushing anyone’s dreams won’t make yours better. Every photographer has their own style and way of doing things. Likewise, every client has an ideal photographer in mind. Some clients prefer another style to mind (and vice versa), and that’s great! I encourage everyone to go with the person and style they love! (That goes to photographers as well- choose a style you LOVE, not just the one that’s trendy). You will be much happier with your work if you focus on growing and learning- not comparing!
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I don’t think any definition of success can be wrong. Whatever success is, is catered towards that person.
For me, my success comes when I ask myself, “Do I love what I’m doing?” followed up by “Am I happy?”. If the answer to both of those is yes, then I’m doing pretty dang good. One of my biggest fears is ending up in a place or career where I’m not happy, and I don’t love what I am doing. As long as Im inspired to create more work and always want to better myself as an artist, I think I can consider myself successful.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
