Check out Serene Dominic’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Serene Dominic.

Serene moved to Phoenix from New York in the Nineties and went from being musician to musician/journalist (writing for Phoenix New Times, AZ Central and Tucson Weekly) to indie label magnate (his non-profit record label Onus Record is home to No Volcano, The Breakup Society, The 1140’s, The Soft Deadlines and RPM Orchestra as well as his own vast catalog.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My hopes for Onus Records is that we develop it as a co-operative where we have a resident house band of players and a rotating cycle of singers to create weekly content assembled in the same assembly line manner that Motown did in the mid Sixties. I would love it if we managed to create a regional sound people can point to with pride as the Sunnyslope Sound.

I also began playing with a band called San Jacinto Death Row Prison Band which is an offshoot of the Dark Lullaby musical and I want to create new music with them and new multi-media projects like Dark Lullaby. There are a lot of record companies in Arizona and more than a few in Sunnyslope all doing great things. The focus of Onus Records has been just to be an arbiter of taste the way record companies used to be.

Onus will also continue to mount theatrical musical works which is another artistic endeavor that requires a large artistic community to be in cahoots for a singular goal. Selfishly, I would like to be a kind of thrift shop Rogers and Hammerstein of Sunnyslope. I don’t think anyone else wants to do that so The message is that we have a lot to be proud of in Phoenix. I just want to be part of that in some way.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Follow the bliss, not the money. Hopefully the money will follow but if you enjoy what you’re doing that’ll be gravy and not the whole plate of mashed potatoes.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
The music and artists on Onus Records can be streamed and purchased at onusrecords.bandcamp.com
