Today we’d like to introduce you to Poppa Savant.
Poppa, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am originally from St. Thomas United States Virgin island’s. When I was 11 years old I moved to Ithaca, NY. I lived in upstate NY until the summer of 2016 when I made the move to Phoenix. I have done some open mics. They have mostly been spoken word poetry pieces. I have done a few events around the valley and I am currently finishing my first rap ep titled A Modern Pharaoh Dreams. It will essentially be a short narrative of who I am, my family and everyday experiences. It will showcase vulnerability in the purest form.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I tell stories. I see my poems and raps as stories about how I view myself. Also, how I few my surroundings. Vulnerability in its purest form is what I what listeners to hear in this first project. Rap has been in a huge influence because it’s all about stories. Whether you want to turn up or chill it’s all a story.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Just grind. We all isn’t rich until we make it lol.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Right now open mics. I’ve been to Poetic Soul; Passion Thursday’s and I Am Root Co events. I am mostly at Passion Thursday’s now at Woody Macayos on Central Ave. I dig the intimacy of the space.
