Today we’d like to introduce you to Zakara (DJ BossyB).
Hi Zakara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I like to say I was born into music because as far back as I can remember, music was always a staple in our house through good times and bad. I think we can all relate to a song that takes us back to a childhood memory or a certain era, that gives you the feels! I couldn’t ask for a more rewarding career than being a DJ!
I started DJing in California back in 2014, and eventually moved to Arizona in 2016. As a California native, the transition from Cali vibes to Arizona “Country” vibes was a bit of a challenge in the beginning, as most of my DJ experience was in “House, Hip-Hop, Afrobeats, Top40, and EDM! However, I was definitely up for the challenge, and years later I can say I’ve learned a lot musically from living here in Arizona! About two years after moving here I joined a music entertainment company “Got You Covered Music” and started branching out with different gigs around the valley.
I later created an LLC (because DJing is a business). My musical knowledge is wide-ranging, and my enthusiasm as an Emcee cannot be denied! Lol! My specialty and favorite gig assignments are weddings! The reason I became a DJ was that I love music and people. My goal as a female in this industry is to empower other women to do what makes them happy, break down barriers, and challenge themselves.
This past year has been my most fun and successful year as a DJ and Entrepreneur. I am grateful for all of the amazing venues, and vendors that I have had to opportunity to meet and work with. I couldn’t ask for a more rewarding career!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Fortunately, I haven’t experienced too many obstacles or challenges as a female DJ. I have learned that confidence, dedication, and staying headstrong is the key to success in this industry. People tend to doubt your ability, and skills if you aren’t a male DJ!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a female open format, DJ and Entrepreneur! My experience is over 8 years of mixing Hip-Hop, House, EDM, and Top40. I’m known for my professionalism, energy, and skills!
Many people aspire to become a DJ but end up quitting because they don’t realize how much work it takes physically and mentally. I’m most proud of my longevity, awards, and accomplishments as a professional DJ!
My personality and ability to read a crowd, are definitely what sets me apart from other DJs!
What do you think about happiness?
Music, good food, and fun people make me happy because these are the 3 most important components to having a good freaking time!!
