Today we’d like to introduce you to Zack Placencia
Zack , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I first picked up a camera in when I was a freshman in high school. Thats right around the age when I really got back into skateboarding and I recently made some new friends who also skated.
If you don’t know anything about skate culture, one unspoken rule is “if it’s not on film, it didn’t happen.” Meaning that you can claim all the crazy tricks and grinds you did, but if there’s no footage to prove it, it didn’t happen.
So naturally, getting more into skateboarding got me to filming my friends and I, and my love for cameras and capturing moments grew from there. Over the years I would put together a few montage videos with each one being filmed and edited a little better than the last, all the while getting more into cinematography and filmmaking.
Eventually I realized there’s a market for video services and a careers built on freelance filmmaking. From there, I’ve filmed basically everything–short films, weddings, commercials, music videos, and even a feature film.
My focus now is split in two industries, and two businesses. Krux Films focusing on outdoor adventure films and commercials, and Dreamcore, which encompasses dark and moody portraiture.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely a struggle when I first started. I was able to get a few gigs at first, threw friends and the few connections I had, but it took me years before I was able to do this full time. I would work part-time at a job and work on film projects after work or on the weekends. Sometimes even working 2 part time jobs plus my own work. I think part of the reason it took me so long to be able to do this full time was that when I started I didn’t know anything about business. I could make content that was beautiful, but wasn’t good at selling it.
I think the biggest thing thought that held me back from going full time was that deep down I didn’t believe that I could. I’m somewhat of a perfectionist and I see all the flaws in what I create. No matter what I put out into the world, I always see how it could be a little better. This stopped me from sharing my work that others would probably be stoked about, but if I wasn’t proud of a project, I would just archive it on my hard drive.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in two very separate industries within the world of content creation. Krux Films is my business that creates films and video ads for outdoor adventure brands, and Dreamcore is focused on dark and moody portraiture, and music videos.
As a creative I find the duality of what I create very fresh and rewarding. I believe the stark contrast of what I do allows me to constantly sharpen my skills and offer unique creative solutions.
The work I’m most proud of is the content that elicits an emotion, a photo or video that leaves the viewer with a feeling. Whether its an inspiring outdoor film or a grungy portrait, my goal is to create to express, not to impress– to share a feeling, because that’s what I believe its all about.
