Check Out Wyatt Kirkland’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wyatt Kirkland.

Hi Wyatt, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A current co-worker recommended I hit up the owners of the shop Flagstaff Tattoo Co. and see if I could apprentice. We hit it off, and I started my apprenticeship in August of 2019. After that, I worked the desk and did what I could to help the shop out in any way, on top of painting as much flash as I could for practice.

Around September of 2020, my mentor, Cam let me tattoo myself for the first time. I slowly started making appointments with friends who were down to let me tattoo them. I took on more and more and eventually went full time beginning of this year. I couldn’t be more stoked on this opportunity and the clients/friends I have made along the way. I’ve grown so much as an artist since the start of my apprenticeship and couldn’t be more pumped about tattooing.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Apprenticeships can be hard, working for free on top of having another job can be tedious. Besides that, tattooing. When you first start out it is so foreign. But when you practice it enough, it’s really fun. Just working on a 3D canvas can be quite a challenge at times.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been big on traditional tattoos. Those are some of my favorite to tattoo. Outside of that, I like to do neo-traditional and gothic blackwork. Lots of black and grey tattoos here, but every once in a while I get to do color tattoos and those are always fun to mess around and get creative with different colors.
