Today we’d like to introduce you to Veianya Hansen.
Hi Veianya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Its not really a cut and dry kind of story. One thing led to another, that led to another. But long story short. My adult daughter and I lived together in Shkoder, Albania. While there, we started a resale and gift shop. Life happened and we ended up abruptly back in the states. But wanted to keep some of Shkoder with us. So using what we learned about a more simple way of life, we recreated the gift shop in America. It’s evolved and changed a lot over time. But the core values and idea behind it remain the same. We sell online, in local stores, and we also do custom orders for gift baskets, party favors, etc.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Thankfully I already had American business experience. I used to have a more metaphysical type of retail shop. So a lot of things were familiar. I think one of the biggest struggles is trying to find the perfect blend of practical and gift worthy when making gift kits. We want to go beyond the stereotypical gift basket items. But at the same time, we need to remember why items like candles and fuzzy socks are so popular to begin with lol. Also figuring out our individual roles in this mother and daughter business. We’re both neurodivergent (I have ADHD and my daughter is autistic). So we try and take advantage of our unique gifts. Z can do repetitive tasks indefinitely. So she always builds the gift sets. I’m more social, so I handle most customer interactions.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My previous experience is a lot lol. Let’s just say that my other work in retail, sales, programming, art, writing, and e-commerce has brought me to a this wonderful place where past skills help me create a gift shop that leads to happy gift recipients.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
It’s probably the most boring and oftentimes frustrating part of small business. But know your numbers. You can’t really start, grow, or expand if your numbers are a mess. Also, patience. It can be tough out here. Most are not becoming a success overnight. Work hard, pay attention, make smart decisions, and listen to your intuition. Maybe not the most glamorous image of small business. But it’s worth the feeling of accomplishment once you start reaching your goals.
