Today we’d like to introduce you to Vaishalini Sitaraman
Hi Vaishalini, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up with a lot of musical influence. My parents really emphasized music growing up: there was music playing in the house 24/7.
I learned Indian Classical Carnatic music, and was also a dancer. Dancing was like my “thing,” you know what I mean? I think that’s where I got my sense of rhythm from. I learned how to play the violin and taught myself the piano. I was always a really big pop fangirl, so belting Ariana Grande and Christina Aguilera songs was kind of my main pasttime. ]I was always singing: in the car, in the shower, basically whenever I possibly could. I also grew up basically being on stage every single weekend. Transitioning into becoming a Pop/R&B singer-songwriter by the time I was 16 was kind of like a natural next step.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a difficult road but it’s worth it. Being an independent artist is HARD. You have to do everything yourself with no outside funding. The promotion is grueling because there’s no industry connections, no nepotism, nothing except your own work that will get you there. But it also makes it even more satisfying with every small win: it’s all you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I call myself a pop singer, but I think what my fans find most entertaining about my music is that I kind of jump genres a lot. I’ve done a little R&B, a little synthwave, a little EDM, a little disco. I’m about to drop a country/folk song in the deluxe version of my debut EP “Guess You’ll Have to Wait” that comes out on September 13.
I like to keep people on their toes and make them really feel like they have a soundtrack for every moment of their life. Whatever stage of your life you are at, I want to give you something to listen to.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I like to answer DMs and reply to comments a lot because that’s the easiest way to find out how people are connecting to the work. It’s also just encouraging; sometimes when you hit those roadblocks it’s nice to see that people still like the art you create.
As far as supporting the music goes, I’d say my favorite way is when people buy a CD or a poster because it’s a physical copy that I know will be there forever. I think it’s really cool, it’s always been my dream to be on a CD cover or poster in somebody’s room like in the 2000s. I grew up obsessed with a lot of popstars (still am) and one of the things that I wish people would bring back is CD signings. I plan to do that one day, but for now I make my CDs and posters in my house with an ancient Windows Vista computer and wait for like 2 hours while it slowly loads, and then I write a little letter to send to the fan that ordered it. It’s very nostalgic and tangible and I love it– it feels like I’m sending a mixtape to a long-distance best friend.
